Half tan calf binding. Spine gilt in six compartments, with raised bands. Marbled boards. Some rubs to the edges and some surface rubs to the boards. All four corners are lightly bumped. The top two corners are rubbed, just exposing board at the corner tips. The joints are good but there are superficial surface cracks to the leather at the spine ends of the lower board. Inner hinges are very good. Lovely brown marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Very small binders mark for John Bumpus, Oxford Street. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. Pale staining to the spine edges and to the bottom edges of both boards, next to the spine. Pale stain to the bottom edges next to the spine of the first couple and last couple of pages (minor marks). Original burgundy red cloth binding with gilt stamped Mr Punch motif and black floral scroll pattern on upper board. Blind stamped floral scroll pattern to lower board and gilt caricatures and titles to spine. A previous owner's name and address written on the front endpaper. Creasing to the front endpaper and half title page. The binding is nice and firm; hinges good. Cloth faded at the spine, with light marks to the spine and rubbed cloth at the spine ends. Corners bumped. Some black smudges to the printing of p.318. Pages are otherwise in very good, clean condition. pp. 1-520 [Jan 7 - June 30].
