Hardback with dust jacket. Scarce first edition of this interesting historical document. This book essentially represents a recruitment drive in the USA for the Second World War effort. From the front flap of the dust jacket: 'The United States has now launched itself upon an intensive program of military rearmament whose ultimate goal is the achievement of preparedness. Real preparedness demands a tremendous effort on the part of the entire population, military, industrial, and civilian alike. Each one of us has an important part in our country's task. Where do you fit into this picture, and what are you doing now to improve your fitness? The answers to these questions have a practical value for you, as well as your country... Fuqua writes of such pertinent subjects as how the draft operates, the age and physical requirements for peace and wartime service, the role of noncombatants and the percentages of casualties in the various branches of service. This information is invaluable either to those who want to take active steps now, or who desire to know what steps they will be called upon to take when the time comes. The individual who acquaints himself in advance with an organization, who can select his job and improve his qualifications, is in a far better position than the man who is suddenly called upon to assume responsibilities in an unfamiliar setup. This much the book can do. The rest will be up to you.' Tipped into the book is a Selective Service Questionnaire, released Saturday October 12, 1940, which is when the Second World War draft began; an interesting document in itself. The book is in very good, clean condition. No previous owner's names, inscriptions or other marks. The binding is firm. The dust jacket is rubbed at the edges, with a few short tears, small chips and small loss to the bottom edge of the front cover. Front flap not price clipped. pp. ix, 183, plates. The dust jacket is supplied by us in a loose protective clear archival film sleeve. This does not adhere to the book or jacket in any way and protects the jacket against wear.
