These separate volumes are uniformly bound in a handsome red morocco with red cloth boards, six gilt ruled spine compartments, five raised bands. Top edges are gilt. Minor rubs. An attractive and sturdy pair. The pair belonged to Hermione Lady Cobbold (nee Bulwer-Lytton) and were given to her by her mother on the occasion of her 15th birthday. The inscription inside each volume reads 'August 31st 1920, Hermione Lytton, from Mother'. Both volumes have some darkening to the edges of the endpapers. Both have a frontis. portrait with tissue guard. The Matthew Arnold volume has a very pale stain to the bottom edge of the front pastedown, endpaper and following free page. Other occasional light marks to pages but overall in very good, clean condition. Bindings firm. Matthew Arnold: pp. xxvii, 460. Wordsworth: pp. xxxii, 986. 19.5cm.
