326 6 Volumes of the Sporting Novels: Plain or Ringlets; Ask Mamma; Mr. Facey Romford's Hounds; Handley Cross; Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour; Hawbuck Grange [Jorrocks Edition, Fine Bindings]
Surtees, R. S. [Robert Smith] ; with illustrations by John Leech and Phiz [Hablot Knight Browne] Bradbury, Agnew & Co. Ltd [c.1890] Bouverie Street, London Half Leather Very Good Book 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall
The Jorrocks Edition. 6 of the 8 Sporting Novels of R. S. Surtees. Two further Sporting Novels were published during his lifetime: Jorrocks Jaunts and Jollities and Hillingdon Hall. Mr. Facey Romford's Hounds was published posthumously in 1865; Surtees died in 1864 [1805-1864]. One further novel was left unfinished at his death; it is called Young Tom Hall. This set of 6 is undated but was published c. the 1890s. They were bound by Truslove and Hanson of Sloane Street, London. Bound in contemporary red half-calf with red cloth boards, marbled endpapers and gilt top edges. Spines gilt in six compartments with raised bands, black morocco title labels in second and third compartments, a horse's head in first compartment, a whip and horseshoe in the fourth, a hound's head in the fifth and a fox's mask in the sixth. Each volume has hand-coloured frontispiece illustrations, with further black and white plates and vignettes in the text. pp. xi, 398; xi, 423; ix, 405; xii, 578; xi, 450; xi, 265. DEFECTS: The bottom corners of the boards of Plain or Ringlets are bumped, there are some minor marks to the bindings including fading to the cloth, short surface crack to the leather of the lower board spine joint of Handley Cross (c. 1cm top edge); the same to the upper board spine joint of Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour (c. 1cm top edge). Inner hinges good, bindings firm, no previous ownership marks, names or inscriptions. The Sporting Novels graced many a library in Victorian country houses and were essential reading for hunting squires. The appeal of the novels was not just limited to the hunting set but his satirical portrayals of Victorian society, including some quite Dickensian characterisations, reached out to a much broader audience as well. The novels are quoted by Siefried Sassoon in is 'Memoirs of a Fox-Hunting Man' and Rudyard Kipling's 'Stalky and Co.' plus others I am sure. A very handsome, finely bound set. Each volume measures 20cm x 14.5cm. A HEAVY set - a postage surcharge will apply to delivery destinations outside the UK mainland as this book costs more to send than our standard postage rate will cover. Small surcharge may apply to UK highlands and islands and N. Ireland; larger surcharge for overseas destinations. NO additional charges for sending within the UK mainland. 103475
