Hardback. Lacks dust jacket. Undated first edition (publication date not stated inside); 1928. The front endpaper has been removed. A pencil inscription takes up the whole of the half-title page. Some foxing and some grubby marks to pages. Very heavy foxing to the outer closed textblock page edges. Red boards are discoloured, marked and rubbed and there is a forwards lean to the spine. Hardback, with dust jacket. First edition. Original plain brown boards, with titles and Brock Books to the spine only. There are some light marks to the front board and there is a pale cup ring mark to the rear board. A slight forwards lean to the spine. A brief gift inscription written neatly at the top edge of the front pastedown. Colour frontispiece and 5 further colour plates. The illustration sides of the plates are all in very good condition but the back of the final colour plate has a scribble in blue biro. A couple of flattened creases to the rear endpaper. List of Biggles titles at the back of the book ends with this title - some of the titles have been underlined quite heavily in pencil. The binding is firm and pages clean. Some light foxing to outer closed textblock page edges and very light spots to endpapers, pastedowns and occasional pale spots to a few page margins. The dust jacket is rubbed and chipped at the edges, with some short nicks and tears, some light marks and then a brown stain to the bottom of the spine and spine edge of the front cover join (see photos). Some quite heavy foxing to outer closed textblock page edges, pale but noticeable foxing to prelims, first few pages and to last few pages. Light occasional spots to other pages and page margins. A little foxing to the outer closed textblock page edges. Previous owner's signature in ink on the half title page. Produced in conformity with the wartime authorised economy standards. Hardback, with dust jacket. Believed to be a 2nd impression copy in a 3rd state dust jacket. Grey blind embossed Brock Books boards with blue titles and outline Scottie dogs to the spine. The boards have dulled / slightly browned in colour, particularly tanned at the spine, and there are some marks to the rear board and a small blue ink mark to the spine edge of the rear board. There is a slight curvature to the boards. Lightly bruised spine ends. Small grubby mark on the front pastedown and endpaper. Noticeable foxing to the outer closed textblock page edges, to the endpapers, pastedowns, title page, preliminary pages and lighter occasional foxing to pages throughout. Hardback, with poor condition dust jacket. Original red boards, with black titles and ship outline to the bottom corner of the front board. There are a few small marks to the rear board, from old sellotape repairs on the dust jacket. The boards are bright and binding firm. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. Some foxing to the outer closed textblock page edges. The pages themselves are slightly age-toned overall but not browned at the edges and overall nice and clean. Colour frontispiece illustration and 5 further colour plates. List of Biggles titles on the reverse of the half-title page ends with Biggles Takes Charge, plus 2 Omnibus titles. The dust jacket is in poor condition, though the front cover is quite clean. Long tears to the front cover spine joint and the back cover has completely detached from the spine. The long tears were all repaired by a previous owner with an acidic sellotape which had yellowed, stained the dust jacket and gone brittle with age. This brittle has now been carefully removed but brown stains where the tape used to be remain and the paper is brittle where the tape has been removed. One long tear to the underside of the jacket's back cover has had a later repair with a paper repair tape. The jacket is largely complete - chips to edges and corners. Rubs to the edges and some creasing. Printed price on the front dust jacket flap of 8s 6d. A light brown stain to the bottom corner of the rear pastedown and a very small brown stain to the bottom corner of the front endpaper and half-title page. Main body of the text - pages are in good, clean condition. Single pink-tinted frontispiece and 7 full page tinted plates by Stead. Hardback, with dust jacket. First edition, in a later state dust jacket. Original blue boards with dark blue / black titles to the spine and front board. The cloth is faded to brown at the spine, with rubs to the edges, slight fraying to the spine ends and a few light marks to the boards. A noticeable forwards lean to the spine. Gift inscription written neatly on the front endpaper, dated 1947. A few small brown marks to the top outer closed textblock page edges. There is a small brown stain to the top edge of the front endpaper, title page, contents page and the first few pages of text. A few small brown marks in the margins of the plate facing p. 32 and the text pages either side. Another small stain to the bottom corner of the plate facing p. 64 and the pages either side - and again to p. 76-77. Pages are overall slightly age-toned / tanned but not browned. The binding is firm. Book list on the reverse of the title page lists 5 Biggles titles and 4 Worrals titles. Colour frontispiece and 8 orange tinted plates. pp. 188, plates. The dust jacket appears to be a slightly later issue than the book, probably from c. 1949. The front flap has been price clipped, rear dust jacket flap lists Biggles and Gimlet titles and the back cover has 'A letter to every boy who reads this book'. The dust jacket is rubbed and chipped at the edges, with small loss at the spine ends and the top edge of the back cover. A couple of longer, approx. 3cm, tears. Imprint from an old (erased) pencil price mark on the front endpaper. The pages are generally age-toned / tanned but not browned. Light foxing to the outer closed textblock page edges and to prelims. The binding is nice and firm. No previous owner's names, inscriptions or other marks. Lists of Biggles and Worrals titles on the reverse of the half-title page. Black and white frontispiece illustration, plus 4 two-tone plates - all in very good condition. pp. 191. The dust jacket has heavy foxing to the underside and to the exterior of the back cover. Rubbed, chipped and worn at the edges, with minor loss to corners and edges and a larger section missing at the base of the spine. The spine is also slightly faded. Though not the first Biggles book to be published (indeed, about the 40th title to be published), this is listed as No. 1 in chronological series order in the later lists of titles produced on the back dust jacket covers and inside the front covers. Chronologically, the first Biggles story. First edition. Original red boards. Spine ends and corners are slightly bruised. Minor rubs to the spine ends. Slightly faded patch to the bottom 3cm of the spine (matching loss to the dust jacket). The binding is firm. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. Some foxing to the outer closed textblock page edges and light foxing to prelims. Yellow-tinted frontispiece illustration and 7 other plates. Small brown grubby mark on page 56. pp. 193, plates. Short list of selected Biggles titles on the reverse of the title page - 11 titles listed. The dust jacket has approx. 3cm of loss at the base of the spine and a couple of further tears which have been repaired by a previous owner to the underside of the jacket with a now yellowed sellotape. The same tape has been used to reinforce the head of the spine and the edges at the dust jacket folds. Further rubs, chips and creasing to the dust jacket edges and the spine has faded. Price on the front flap of the DJ of 6/-. Brief Biggles biog and a few Biggles titles listed on the rear dust jacket flap. The back cover of the DJ has a synopsis of Biggles Goes to School.
