Soft back. 11th impression. The binding is firm but there are a few reading creases to the spine and the covers have faded to cream (from blue) at the spine and the spine edge of the front cover. Otherwise, in nice clean condition inside. No previous owner's names, inscriptions or other marks. Would be described as very good except for the significant fading to the covers. pp. viii, 783. 287 The Turf-cutter's Donkey Goes Visiting: The Story of an Island Holiday
Lynch, Patricia ; with illustrations by George Altendorf J. M. Dent and Sons Ltd London 1943 Hardcover Very Good Very Good Book 12mo - over 6 - 7" tall
Hardback with dust jacket. 3rd impression. Was first published in 1935. War Economy Standard book production. Creamy white cloth boards, with titles in blue. The binding is firm. Paper has tanned / browned but does not feel brittle. Pages are clean throughout except for page 122 and the facing plate - it looks like a printing fault to the illustration resulted in a blob of ink (large coin sized) which had stuck the plate to the page facing (p. 122). It may be a grubby mark rather than an excess of ink but the book otherwise looks unread / barely read, so I suggest it was likely to be ink. The pages are now unstuck and the text is readable. The dust jacket has generally discoloured / greyed and has darkened, or browned, at the spine. There are some short tears and there is some minor loss to the head and tail of the spine. Overall, a nice early copy of this scarce book. pp. viii, 229. The dust jacket is supplied by us in a loose protective clear archival film sleeve. This does not adhere to the book or jacket in any way and protects the jacket against wear. (Books photographed without the protective cover, to avoid reflections). 107058
Price: 45.00 GBP

274 Reading with Patrick, a True Story: A Teacher, A Student and the Life-Changing Power of Books
Kuo, Michelle Macmillan 2017 1447286073 / 9781447286073 First UK Edition Hardcover New New Book 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall
New hardback with dust jacket. RRP 16.99. First impression, UK edition. As a young English teacher keen to make a difference in the world, Michelle Kuo took a job at a tough school in the Mississippi Delta, sharing books and poetry with a young African-American teenager named Patrick and his classmates. For the first time, these kids began to engage with ideas and dreams beyond their small town, and to gain an insight into themselves that they had never had before. Two years later, Michelle left to go to law school; but Patrick began to lose his way, ending up jailed for murder. And that's when Michelle decided that her work was not done, and began to visit Patrick once a week, and soon every day, to read with him again. Reading with Patrick is an inspirational story of friendship, a coming-of-age story for both a young teacher and a student, an expansive, deeply resonant meditation on education, race and justice, and a love letter to literature and its power to transcend social barriers. pp. xxi, 296. The dust jacket is supplied by us in a loose protective clear archival film sleeve. This does not adhere to the book or jacket in any way and it protects the jacket against wear. 306875
