2 Volume first edition set; Volume I published 12th May 1786. Volume II published 7th June 1788. Uniform volumes. Full tan calf. Spines sympathetically rebacked in matching morocco. Volume II stands just a fraction taller on the shelf than volume I. Spines gilt in imitation compartments, no raised bands, original title panels laid on. Marbled endpapers. Text blocks are clean and bright with only minimal age spotting and discolouration. Plate 7 in volume I has an unevenly trimmed foredge (just the very edge of the page, illustration not affected). In volume II p.62/3 has a torn bottom corner (no text affected, just loss to the margin) and a couple of short marginal tears to p.1/2. v. II has silk ribbon page marker present but unattached. Corners rubbed, exposing board at corners and there are some scuffs to the rear board of v. II. Errors in paging: v. I, 367-368 repeated in numbering (text is different, just numbering repeated); v. II, 297 numbered 293. Volume I: pp. vi, 426, 427-434 [Index], 1-40 [Appendices I-IX] + Appendix X: iv, 5-40. Each volume has engraved frontispiece, title pages with vignette engravings, plus a further 78 copper-engraved plates across the two volumes depicting infantry battle dress, weaponry, arms and armour: 14 plates in v. I and 66 in v. II. The engraving is excellent quality. The frontis. of v. II has some sympathetic restoration - two long heavy creases have been reinforced - one on the underside and one in the margin on both sides - with what appears to be a near invisible acid-free tissue repair. 29 x 23cm. These are very good volumes, sympathetically restored, handsome and strong bindings; will add to any collection. New hardback. First impression. RRP 10.00. In Off the Shelf: A Celebration of Bookshops in Verse, Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy has commissioned a selection of the UK's most loved and lauded poets to each write a poem in celebration of books and bookshops - the worlds they hold, the freedoms they promise, and the memories they evoke. From a basement of forgotten books to the shelves of a cramped Welsh arcade, from the poetry corner of the local bookstore to the last bookshop standing in a post-apocalyptic world, these are poems that pay tribute to all the places that house the stories we treasure. With poems from Carol Ann Duffy, Scottish Makar Jackie Kay, National Poet of Wales Gillian Clarke, as well as Clive James, Michael Longley, Don Paterson, Patience Agbabi and many more, this beautiful anthology is a heart-warming reminder of how books nourish us, save us, and inspire us. 58pp. 306531

A multitude of curious questions are answered in Britain by the Book, a fascinating travelogue with a literary theme, taking in unusual writers' haunts and the surprising places that inspired some of our favourite fictional locations.
