Appears unread. 804pp. When the body of Piet Jansen is discovered amid the ruins of an archaeological site by the Nile it looks like a routine investigation for Inspector Yusuf Khalifa. But the more he learns about Jansen, the more he is reminded of the brutal murder, some years earlier, of an Israeli woman at Karnak for which he always suspected the wrong man was convicted. From the collection of the archaeologist Christopher Hawkes (1905-1992) and inscribed to him by the author, his father, on the half-title page. Inscription is written in initials rather than full name. Dated 1930. The binding is nice and firm. The cloth of the spine is dulled and has pale staining. A few foxing spots to the outer closed textblock page edges. A good copy of this scarce title, with interesting provenance. pp. 206, 8. Front endpapers depict plan of the Temple. 105760

As she lay basking in the sun on the temple terrace, people came to watch and worship. But her fortunes have changed. Snatched by a bearded stranger in an alleyway, she is stolen away and forced to catch rats to survive.
