Small book, just slightly larger in size than a children's Brockhampton strip book from the 1950s. Stapled binding with maroon spine, pictorial card front cover and plain card back cover. Some creasing to the front cover. The back cover has a rusty stain at the top edge and a separate small greasy stain, also at the top edge. Both marks also affect the last few pages of text, though marks to pages are more pale than the marks to the back cover. 15.5cm x 8cm. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. First published in 1944; this is a c. 1949 reprint. Previous owner's name and address written in biro inside the front cover. Yellow cloth spine with rusted staples and marks showing through. Some slightly grubby light marks to the covers. Two short pen line marks to the back cover. Covers are lightly creased. A well-read copy, with darkened / thumbed page edges and cover wear, as already described; but the pages themselves are in nice, clean condition. Illustrations are blue and black and this is the full edition of 124 numbered frames. There is a list of titles on the reverse of the title page, listing 8 titles altogether, with this as number 3 and the last title being 'Hurrah! For Mary Mouse'. Hardback, no dust jacket. Pictorial boards. In only FAIR condition. First edition. The spine has been repaired to the full length with acid-free archival repair tissue. This goes over the top of an old sellotape repair - the old brittle tape has been removed but staining from the sellotape remains along the length of the spine. There is also loss to the spine, approx. 5.5cm. at the top end and a previous owner has typed a small strip where the title goes so you can read the title of the book. Heavy foxing to the endpapers and pastedowns. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. The binding is firm and inner hinges are good. Plates are quite clean; there are just a couple of foxing spots to a few plates and some very light creasing to a couple of plates. pp. 34, plates. 106756

Illustrations are red and black and this is the full edition of 124 numbered frames. There is a list of titles on the back cover, with Mary Mouse titles including A Prize for Mary Mouse, and How Do You Do, Mary Mouse; Jimmy titles, the last one being Jimmy and the Little Old Engine; three The Twins stories; two Honk stories; and Master Bunny The Baker's Boy. First published in 1950; this is a much later printing from c.1964 or slightly later. SHORTENED EDITION - the original edition has 124 frames of pictures; this one has 44 frames. Black and red illustrations. Red cloth spine. Some foxing to the front cover and a large biro cross mark on the back cover, from corner to corner. There is a pale stain (water-type mark) to the top corner of all pages in the margin only. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. The first page is crumpled, affecting the bottom quarter of the page, with a short tear in the text. Short nick and small crease to the bottom corner of the next two pages. A flattened crease to the bottom corner of the back cover. Printed price on the back cover of 1/- and printed list of some of the other Mary Mouse titles, including Mary Mouse and the Little Donkey which was the last title to be published in 1964. First published in 1951; this is a new abridged edition from c. 1959. The original full edition was illustrated with 124 numbered frames and this new abridged edition has 90 frames (not numbered). Yellow pictorial covers, with clown driving red car and with red cloth spine. Red and black illustrations. There are two small brown marks on the front cover and a few small brown marks on the back cover. Pages are tanned, if darkened. Binding firm. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. Flattened crease to the top corner of the title page. Price of 1/- on the back cover. Illustrations are not credited to Olive F. Openshaw (unlike the original edition where they are credited to her) but they are the same illustrations and the last frame bears her printed signature. 105258

Scarce soft back edition; publication date 1952, first thus. The covers are worn, with rubs to edges faded spine, and splits to the head and tail of the spine at the front cover joint. Back cover darkened / discoloured and there is a pale grubby mark to the bottom edge of the back cover. Strip of dark brown discolouration between pages 160-161 where an old news cutting had been used as a bookmark. A few passages in the book have been marked in pencil. Loosely enclosed is a brief typewritten letter, signed by Bevan, dated 3rd February 1960 and with a House of Commons embossed stamp in the top left hand corner of the notepaper. The book itself is not signed; only the letter. 309389

Small oblong format strip book, with 92 frames of cartoon-style black, red and white illustrations (frames not numbered), with story underneath the illustrations. Red spine. There are a few light brown foxing-type marks towards the bottom edge of the front cover (near the words Pictures by Molly Brett) and to the back cover. There is also a little foxing to the outer closed textblock page edges. The binding is nice and firm and the pages are all clean. No previous owner's names, inscriptions or other marks inside. Price of 1/- net printed on the front cover. Three other Clicky the Clown stories mentioned on the reverse of the title page, ending with the third Clicky story, Clicky Goes to Toyland. Hardback with dust jacket. The seventh Famous Five story. 5th impression; was first published in October 1948. Original red boards, with black titles. Some pale mottling (lightened patches) to the pastedowns suggest book may have been affected by damp though boards are clean - no evidence of damp to the outsides of the boards. No names or inscriptions inside but there are initials written in ink at the top of the dust jacket front flap. Small strip of paper stuck on the half-title page (I almost missed this as the paper colour is very nearly the same as the page). The binding is firm and inner hinges are very good. Foxing to the outer closed textblock page edges and to the first and last few pages. A forwards lean to the spine. pp. 192. The dust jacket is worn at the edges, with short tears, creasing, chips and small loss including approx. 0.5cm loss at the head of the spine. Some foxing to the dust jacket. Front flap not price clipped. The dust jacket is supplied by us in a loose protective clear archival film sleeve. First edition. Original matt buff boards with blue line illustration to the front board. The boards have a strange brittle dried glue-type strip to the spine and spine edges of both boards. I'm not sure why as the boards are in good condition and I cannot see what this glued strip would have been for (see photos). The boards are otherwise clean. The binding is firm and the pages clean and bright but there is a previous owner's name written at the top edge of the front endpaper. 51pp. The dust jacket is very good - light rubs to the spine ends and corners. Price of 2/6 on the front flap of the dust jacket. List of titles in the series on the rear flap of the dust jacket, of which this is the last one. Tally of over 100 available Ladybird titles mentioned on the rear dust jacket flap. The dust jacket is supplied by us in a loose protective clear archival film sleeve. A first edition or an early reprint from the following year (1951). I believe the Honk title listed on the back cover, Honk Runs Away, was published in 1951 but it's hard to verify and could have been published or ready for publication in 1950. Red spine with staples underneath. On the back cover rust marks from the staples have bled to the surrounding area of the back cover. Some light creasing to the front cover. No creasing to the back cover but back cover has marks. Printed price of 1/- net on the front cover. Some light blue biro pen scribbles on the inside of the front cover. The first few pages have a small stain (water-type mark) to the very edge, towards the top of the foredges in the margins. The pages otherwise have light handling creases but no further marks. Bound volume of the Duke de Cirella's illustrated monthly journal, Cartons Mondains, featuring 38 colour cartoons (lithographs). Begins with issue 15 Decembre 1906 - 1er Janvier 1907. 13 full issues with the last one being 15 Dec 1907 - 1er Jan 1908 plus there are 8 plates at the back labelled Fevrier 1908 but there does not seem to be a full issue for Fevrier 1908. Two text pages in issue 15 Mai - 1er Juin have a torn strip to the foredge (margin only affected). Plates 99 and the first one numbered issue 100 (there are a few) have some marks / abrasions (possibly from binding glue). Overall, remarkably clean. Free from foxing. The boards measure 43.5 x 33cm ; plates therefore just slightly smaller. Bound in olive green cloth, faded at the spine and edges, with some light marks and rubs to the surface of the boards and some fraying to the cloth at the spine ends and corners. The binding is firm and inner hinges are very good. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. There are brown stains to the rear endpaper and pastedown.
