23 Shakespeare and Company: A History of the Rag and Bone Shop of the Heart
Halverson, Krista (edited by); with a foreword by Jeanette Winterson and an epilogue by Sylvia Whitman Shakespeare and Company Paris 2016 9791096101009 Hardcover New Book 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall
New hardback, shrinkwrapped. RRP 24.95. 384pp. George Whitman opened his bookstore in a tumbledown 16th-century building just across the Seine from Notre-Dame in 1951, a decade after the original Shakespeare and Company had closed. Run by Sylvia Beach, it had been the meeting place for the Lost Generation and the first publisher of James Joyce's Ulysses. (This book includes an illustrated adaptation of Beach's memoir.) Since Whitman picked up the mantle, Shakespeare and Company has served as a home-away-from-home for many celebrated writers, from Jorge Luis Borges to Ray Bradbury, A.M. Homes to Dave Eggers, as well as for young authors and poets. Visitors are invited not only to read the books in the library and to share a pot of tea, but sometimes also to live in the shop itself - all for free. More than 30,000 people have stayed at Shakespeare and Company, fulfilling Whitman's vision of a socialist utopia masquerading as a bookstore. Through the prism of the shop's history, the book traces the lives of literary expats in Paris from 1951 to the present, touching on the Beat Generation, civil rights, May '68 and the feminist movement. A HEAVY book - a postage surcharge will apply to delivery destinations outside the UK as this book costs more to send than our standard postage rate will cover. NO additional charges for sending within the UK. 306864

11 The Song of Songs in English Renaissance Literature: Kisses of Their Mouths
Flinker, Noam D.S.Brewer Ltd 2000 0859915867 / 9780859915861 Hard Cover Fine No Jacket as Issued 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
BRAND NEW HARDBACK. RRP. 50.00. 173pp. Green cloth. No dust jacket (as issued). Many English Renaissance texts offer readings of the Song of Songs, by both well-known authors, such as Shakespeare, and the long neglected (William Baldwin, Robert Aylett, Abiezer Coppe and Lawrence Clarkson). This new study looks at the different traditions they represent, and most notably the balance in the tension of the Song of Songs as oral and written, carnal and spiritual. The introduction presents a historical and theoretical discussion of Canticles, using a Rabbinic model for juxtaposing orality and textuality; the author goes on to argue that from the time of ancient Sumer through medieval England motifs found in the Song of Songs are simultaneously sexual and spiritual just as they are likewise oral and textual. By attempting to recover oral approaches to any text, we encounter a series of forces that act to balance an open, oral, and sexual understanding of the erotic biblical text against a more closed, textual and spiritual reading. This balance is then traced through works by Baldwin, Spenser, Aylett, Coppe, Clarkson and Milton. Noam Flinker is currently Chairperson at the Department of English, University of Haifa. 032436
