13 Nature and Science on the Pacific Coast: A guide-book for scientific travelers in the west. Edited uner the auspices of the Pacific Coast Committee of the American Association for the Advancement of Science
Grinnell, Joseph (editor) Paul Elder and Company Publishers San Francisco 1915 First Edition Hardcover Fair No Jacket Book 12mo - over 6 - 7" tall
Original light tan cloth. The boards are marked, with some pale pink stains to the rear board. An approx. one inch split to the cloth at the head of the spine / front joint. There is a slight (very slight) buckle to the textblock and the plates all have pale water marks to the edges (plates only). The pages themselves are otherwise relatively clean, except for some pencil line marks in the margins and some grubby marks to pages 6 and 7 and to page 99. Pages also tanned / darkened. Considering the marks etc. the binding is firm and sound, so a reasonably solid working copy. This copy was from the personal library of SMITH ELY JELLIFFE but does not bear his signature or name. Smith Ely Jelliffe (1866-1945) was an eminent American physician, psychiatrist and early psychoanalyst. From 1902 he owned and edited the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease and in 1913 he was founder of Psychoanalytic Review. He was regular correspondent of Freud and Jung and was one of the earliest proponents of Freudian theory in the United States. pp. xii, 302 + some nice fold-out maps at the back. 104593

16 Frozen Earth: The Once and Future Story of Ice Ages
MacDougall, Doug University of California Press 2006 0520275926 / 9780520275928 Soft cover New Book 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall
New paperback. RRP 23.95. pp. xxvi, 256. In this engrossing and accessible book, Doug Macdougall explores the causes and effects of ice ages that have gripped our planet throughout its history, from the earliest known glaciation - nearly three billion years ago - to the present. Following the development of scientific ideas about these dramatic events, Macdougall traces the lives of many of the brilliant and intriguing characters who have contributed to the evolving understanding of how ice ages come about. As it explains how the great Pleistocene Ice Age has shaped the earth's landscape and influenced the course of human evolution, Frozen Earth also provides a fascinating look at how science is done, how the excitement of discovery drives scientists to explore and investigate, and how timing and chance play a part in the acceptance of new scientific ideas. Macdougall describes the awesome power of cataclysmic floods that marked the melting of the glaciers of the Pleistocene Ice Age. He probes the chilling evidence for Snowball Earth, an episode far back in the earth's past that may have seen our planet encased in ice from pole to pole. He discusses the accumulating evidence from deep-sea sediment cores, as well as ice cores from Greenland and the Antarctic, that suggests fast-changing ice age climates may have directly impacted the evolution of our species and the course of human migration and civilization. Frozen Earth also chronicles how the concept of the ice age has gripped the imagination of scientists for almost two centuries. It offers an absorbing consideration of how current studies of Pleistocene climate may help us understand earth's future climate changes, including the question of when the next glacial interval will occur. 306421
