A View of Antient [sic] History; from the Creation of the World to the Rise of the Macedonian Empire. Including the Progress of Literature and Fine Arts. And illustrated with a map of the Antient World. Volume I only [of a 2 volume set]. The Second Edition. Rutherford, William J. Murray Fleet Street, London 1793 Half Leather Good Book 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall This lovely armorial binding was from the library of William Stuart of Tempsford Hall in Bedfordshire and Aldenham Abbey in Hertfordshire (1798-1874). Bound in polished marbled calf, with the arms of William Stuart in gilt on the upper board - a demi lion with the motto Nobilis Ira. William Stuart amassed a large library during his lifetime, a part of which was sold at Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge on 17 June 1875 and a further portion was sold at Christie, Manson & Wood's on 6 March 1895. The rest of his library was destroyed by fire at Tempsford Hall not long after the sales. The Royal Library at Windsor has a large number of books that belonged to William Stuart. Sadly, this is an odd volume; it is Volume I ONLY of what would should be a two volume set. The binding is chipped at the spine ends, losing the headband . Further rubs to the spine, with loss to the title and volume panels. Gilt tooled spine, 6 compartments, imitation bands. Joints are good. Inside, on the front pastedown there is a pasted plate of Aldenham Abbey, though no name; plus a small pasted Library plate. No other library marks. Front inner hinge a little weakened just before the title page. Overall, a solid copy however. Top edge dusty. Spotting to outer page textblock edges. Some foxing to rear pastedown and very lightly to endpaper. Pages are generally very clean. Top corner of the front endpaper torn with loss. This volume contains Rutherford's map of the Ancient World bound in at the front - in very good condition, crisp but with a short marginal tear and a couple of very light foxing spots. pp. xiv, [map], 450, [2] catalogue pages. An attractive binding with an interesting provenance. 103969
