The Art of Florence [2 Volume set] Andres, Glenn M. ; Hunisak, John M. ; Turner, A. Richard ; with principal photography by Takashi Okamura Artabras | Abbeville Publishing [c. 1994] 1994 0896601110 / 9780896601116 Hardcover Fine Slipcase Fine Book Folio - over 12 - 15" tall 2 volumes in slipcase. Both volumes and the slipcase are in excellent, fine condition. Beautifully illustrated throughout. More than 700 color images and another 854 duotones and architectural drawings have been reproduced with a meticulous care worthy of the Renaissance craft tradition. 1312 pages. This important and uncommonly beautiful publication analyzes the history of Florentine art in terms of the distinctly Florentine and Tuscan influences that shaped it-an approach never before employed in a study of this breadth and complexity. The fascinating and lucid text by Glenn Andres, John Hunisak, and Richard Turner gracefully links Florentine architecture, sculpture, and painting to the rich social fabric and the dramatic political life of the city. The Song of Songs in English Renaissance Literature: Kisses of Their Mouths Flinker, Noam D.S.Brewer Ltd 2000 0859915867 / 9780859915861 Hard Cover Fine No Jacket as Issued 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall BRAND NEW HARDBACK. RRP. £50.00. 173pp. Green cloth. No dust jacket (as issued). Many English Renaissance texts offer readings of the Song of Songs, by both well-known authors, such as Shakespeare, and the long neglected (William Baldwin, Robert Aylett, Abiezer Coppe and Lawrence Clarkson). This new study looks at the different traditions they represent, and most notably the balance in the tension of the Song of Songs as oral and written, carnal and spiritual. The introduction presents a historical and theoretical discussion of Canticles, using a Rabbinic model for juxtaposing orality and textuality; the author goes on to argue that from the time of ancient Sumer through medieval England motifs found in the Song of Songs are simultaneously sexual and spiritual just as they are likewise oral and textual. By attempting to recover oral approaches to any text, we encounter a series of forces that act to balance an open, oral, and sexual understanding of the erotic biblical text against a more closed, textual and spiritual reading. This balance is then traced through works by Baldwin, Spenser, Aylett, Coppe, Clarkson and Milton. Noam Flinker is currently Chairperson at the Department of English, University of Haifa. 032436
