Evelyn Ward Everett-Green (17 November 1856, London - 23 April 1932, Funchal) was an English novelist who started her writing career with improving and pious stories for children, and later wrote historical fiction for older girls, and then adult romantic fiction. It is possible that it may have had a preliminary page, but if it did have then it's been neatly removed. I cannot be sure as I do not have a comparison copy. Interior binding staples have rusted. POOR CONDITION. Original Rupert bear annual for 1937. Pictorial boards with red cloth spine. The cloth of the spine is discoloured and has several tears and the rear hinge looks re-glued by a previous owner. Extensive rubbing to the boards. Front inner hinge has been crudely strengthened by a previous owner with stiff card (not an attractive repair but a functional one). Rear inner hinge is cracked and there are further weak points to the binding. Page 13/14 is a photocopy replacement (original leaf missing). Some short tears, creasing and light marks to pages but pages are relatively clean. No writing or colouring in to pages. Page 111/112 is ragged at the edges. Top edge gilt. Other edges deckled / untrimmed. Inscribed by the author on the front endpaper; inscription reads 'To A.A.F.H. from C.M.W., July 15th 1926'. Some foxing to the outer closed textblock edges. The binding is firm and pages otherwise clean. Mostly poetry extracts, with the original on one side of the page and the Greek facing. Preface: 'During thirty-three years spend at Eton I have served under three different Head Masters, and for the last twenty-nine years have had the honour of helping them with the work of Division I. This has entailed the writing of a good number of "fair copies" in Greek, some of which I have now ventured to have printed privately and sent to some of my friends, to two of whom... I am especially indebted... I hope that any former member of Division I, who happens to cast eye upon these Versions, may feel the same happiness in his memories of that Division as the author of this work.' 022821

In her preface the author writes that she has written this history 'for a real little Arthur' and this copy is inscribed on a front free ene page to 'Arthur Frederick Warren, July 29th 1835, from his very affectionate friend, Maria Callcott.' The textblock is still quite firm but this little book LACKS BOARDS / BINDING. Marble endpapers and the reverse of the f.e.p. has hand-written notes by previous owner / seller. Free endpaper with author's inscription also has another's previous owner's name at the top edge in small, neat writing. Some quite heavy foxing to the prelims and first few pages; lighter occasional spots to pages throughout. pp. vii, 228. 14.3 x 9cm.
