No previous owner's names or inscriptions. Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine was a long running monthly literary journal. It began in April 1817 and, when it moved HQ to London in 1905, it became simply Blackwood's Magazine. A number of notable authors published their novels and other writings in Blackwood's; for example, George Eliot, Anthony Trollope, Margaret Oliphant, Thomas Hardy, Joseph Conrad, and many others. It ceased publication in 1980. This volume contains the first printing of part of the novel, Sarracinesa, by Francis Marion Crawford, probably the best known work of this prolific nineteenth-century author. pp. 1-876. Blue cloth with gilt decoration. Publication date not stated but is 1904. Inscribed by the author at the top edge of the front endpaper. The inscription reads: Pamela, with the Author's love - [signed] EFB 10/9/4. The boards are bowed / bent and are rubbed at the spine and corners, with a short snag in the cloth at the spine, approx. 3cm from the base of the spine, fraying to the cloth at the spine ends and a short split of approx. 1cm in the cloth at the top of the spine / joint with front board and another at the bottom of the spine / joint with rear board. Some pale splash marks to the boards, which are also faded at the spine and edges. The binding is shaken in a few places but holds. Some bubbles to the pastedowns. Illustrated throughout with black and white line drawings by Dorothy Furniss, daughter of Harry Furniss; two of the illustrations have been coloured with watercolour paint (quite neatly though one has a smudge). A few minor grubby handling marks to pages. Overall an acceptable reading or reference copy of this scarce children's mermaid story. pp. 142. 106089
