Handsomely bound in half brown leather with gilt tooling to the spine, 5 raised bands, red title panel and black volume spine label. Some rubs to edges and corners. Marbled boards, endpapers and all edges. The binding is nice and firm. In very good condition. Joints and hinges all very good. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine was a long running monthly literary journal. It began in April 1817 and, when it moved HQ to London in 1905, it became simply Blackwood's Magazine. A number of notable authors published their novels and other writings in Blackwood's; for example, George Eliot, Anthony Trollope, Margaret Oliphant, Thomas Hardy, Joseph Conrad, and many others. It ceased publication in 1980. This volume contains the first printing of part of the novel, Sarracinesa, by Francis Marion Crawford, probably the best known work of this prolific nineteenth-century author. pp. 1-876. There is a pale brown stain to the outer closed textblock page edges, affecting most of the textblock; just visible to the page margins at the foredges (pale marks). Hardback. Blue cloth with gilt decoration. Publication date not stated but is 1904. Inscribed by the author at the top edge of the front endpaper. The inscription reads: Pamela, with the Author's love - [signed] EFB 10/9/4. The boards are bowed / bent and are rubbed at the spine and corners, with a short snag in the cloth at the spine, approx. 3cm from the base of the spine, fraying to the cloth at the spine ends and a short split of approx. 1cm in the cloth at the top of the spine / joint with front board and another at the bottom of the spine / joint with rear board. Some pale splash marks to the boards, which are also faded at the spine and edges. The binding is shaken in a few places but holds. Some bubbles to the pastedowns. Illustrated throughout with black and white line drawings by Dorothy Furniss, daughter of Harry Furniss; two of the illustrations have been coloured with watercolour paint (quite neatly though one has a smudge). A few minor grubby handling marks to pages. Overall an acceptable reading or reference copy of this scarce children's mermaid story. pp. 142. 106089

All five volumes are in good condition. All lack dust jackets and are rubbed at the spine ends and corners, with lighter rubs to edges. Bound in quarter black cloth, with printed paper sides. The sides are a patterned paper by Curwen Press, designed by Sarah Nechamkin. They would have had dust jackets when published and may have been sold as a boxed set (there was a boxed set of the 6 Jane Austen titles produced but these are without a box). Emma is the missing volume from this set. Sense and Sensibility is a 1st Novel Library edition, of 1948, pp. viii, 374; Pride and Prejudice is a 1st Novel Library edition of 1949, pp. viii, 386, has a small pale stain to the outer closed textblock foredge; Northanger Abbey is a first Novel Library edition of 1948, pp. viii, 236; Persuasion is a reprint of 1951, first published in the Novel Library edition 1947, pp. vi, 254; Mansfield Park is a 1st Novel Library edition of 1949, pp. viii, 479, has a very small brown stain near the top edge of the front cover.
