15 L'Acropole d'Athe`nes. Le Parthenon. 2 large portfolios - Premiere Serie et Deuxieme Serie
Fougeres, Gustave Editions Albert Morance [c. 1930] 1930 Hardcover Good Book Elephant Folio - over 15 - 23" tall
136 plates in 2 folios. 136 planches en 2 albums. With introductory text of 16 pages. Plates are dated 1913 ; copyright is 1910 but there are references in the text dated as late as 1924, leading me to believe this is likely to be the 1930 edition, or thereabouts. Plates are mostly black and white photographic. Plate no. 74 is diagrammatic and has colour. There are a few other diagrams. A number of plates across both folios have light biopredation to the very edges of the plates; a few plates in the second folio have more heavy insect damage to the edges of the plates and Plate 135 is significantly affected. Plates in the first folio are mostly clean; just a couple of light foxing spots. Plates in the second folio have more signs of foxing and grey-ish handling marks. Still, overall quite good and mostly free from any creasing. The folio albums themselves are heavily worn: the first folio is completely split down one length of the red cloth spine; folio two just about holds at the spine but has significant wear and splits. Both folios have rubs and marks to the boards. Both have their original ties - tied to the top edge and to the foredge. A fairy good full working set of these plates. Folios are large, 52 x 37cm. This set is VERY LARGE AND HEAVY - a significant surcharge will apply to international orders as this set will cost a great deal more to send than our standard rate will cover. Shipping to some destinations may not be available - please enquire before ordering. NO additional charges for sending within the UK mainland. UK highlands, islands and N. Ireland may incur an additional charge. A discount on postage is available for collection from our North Oxfordshire shop premises. 307595

Hardback, with dust jacket. The book would be described as very good but there are some pale brown splash marks to the outer closed textblock page foredges. The pages themselves are otherwise clean. The binding is firm. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. Dust jacket is very good and not price clipped. pp. xv, [1], 144. The dust jacket is supplied by us in a loose protective clear archival film sleeve. This does not adhere to the book or jacket in any way and it protects the jacket against wear. 307248

5 The Art of Florence [2 Volume set]
Andres, Glenn M. ; Hunisak, John M. ; Turner, A. Richard ; with principal photography by Takashi Okamura Artabras | Abbeville Publishing [c. 1994] 1994 0896601110 / 9780896601116 Hardcover Fine Slipcase Fine Book Folio - over 12 - 15" tall
2 volumes in slipcase. Both volumes and the slipcase are in excellent, fine condition. Beautifully illustrated throughout. More than 700 color images and another 854 duotones and architectural drawings have been reproduced with a meticulous care worthy of the Renaissance craft tradition. 1312 pages. This important and uncommonly beautiful publication analyzes the history of Florentine art in terms of the distinctly Florentine and Tuscan influences that shaped it-an approach never before employed in a study of this breadth and complexity. The fascinating and lucid text by Glenn Andres, John Hunisak, and Richard Turner gracefully links Florentine architecture, sculpture, and painting to the rich social fabric and the dramatic political life of the city. Woven into this compelling history is the most luxurious and comprehensive visual documentation available of Florence's unrivaled treasures. n.d. but this copy is a c. 1994 printing. 2 Volume first edition set; Volume I published 12th May 1786. Volume II published 7th June 1788. Uniform volumes. Full tan calf. Spines sympathetically rebacked in matching morocco. Volume II stands just a fraction taller on the shelf than volume I. Spines gilt in imitation compartments, no raised bands, original title panels laid on. Marbled endpapers. Text blocks are clean and bright with only minimal age spotting and discolouration. Plate 7 in volume I has an unevenly trimmed foredge (just the very edge of the page, illustration not affected). In volume II p.62/3 has a torn bottom corner (no text affected, just loss to the margin) and a couple of short marginal tears to p.1/2. v. II has silk ribbon page marker present but unattached. Corners rubbed, exposing board at corners and there are some scuffs to the rear board of v. II. Errors in paging: v. I, 367-368 repeated in numbering (text is different, just numbering repeated); v. II, 297 numbered 293. Volume I: pp. vi, 426, 427-434 [Index], 1-40 [Appendices I-IX] + Appendix X: iv, 5-40. Appendix X has its own title page, A General and Compleat List-Military of every Commission-Officer of Horse and Foot, now Commanding His Majesties Land-Forces of England.. etc. Volume II: pp. 352, vi [description of plates in v. II], [10 - Index & placement of cuts]. Each volume has engraved frontispiece, title pages with vignette engravings, plus a further 78 copper-engraved plates across the two volumes depicting infantry battle dress, weaponry, arms and armour: 14 plates in v. I and 66 in v. II. The engraving is excellent quality. The frontis. of v. II has some sympathetic restoration - two long heavy creases have been reinforced - one on the underside and one in the margin on both sides - with what appears to be a near invisible acid-free tissue repair. 29 x 23cm. These are very good volumes, sympathetically restored, handsome and strong bindings; will add to any collection. Francis Grose [c. 1731-1791] was a renowned English antiquary and militia man, best known for his 1772 Antiquities of England and Wales and also written about by his friend Robert Burns in the poem, Epigram on Francis Grose the Antiquary.
