A 16-page pamphlet version of an article formerly published in Blackwood's Magazine. Sewn binding at the spine. Macaulay's criticism of Croker's edition of Boswell's Life of Johnson sparked a bitter feud between the two men. From the Prefaratory note inside the front cover: 'The republication, in a cheap form, for railway reading, of Mr. Macaulay's bitter and unjust article on Mr. Croker's edition of Boswell's Life of Johnson, has induced Mr. Murray to issue in a cheap form a series of replies to the assertions and criticism of that article.' Worn and torn; there is a tear, approx one inch, in the foredge of every page and another tear to the top edge of the front cover / title page. 307703

Handsomely bound in half brown leather with gilt tooling to the spine, 5 raised bands, red title panel and black volume spine label. Some rubs to edges and corners. Marbled boards, endpapers and all edges. The binding is nice and firm. In very good condition. Joints and hinges all very good. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine was a long running monthly literary journal. It began in April 1817 and, when it moved HQ to London in 1905, it became simply Blackwood's Magazine. A number of notable authors published their novels and other writings in Blackwood's; for example, George Eliot, Anthony Trollope, Margaret Oliphant, Thomas Hardy, Joseph Conrad, and many others. It ceased publication in 1980. This volume contains the first printing of part of the novel, Sarracinesa, by Francis Marion Crawford, probably the best known work of this prolific nineteenth-century author. pp. 1-876. Volume I only. In her preface the author writes that she has written this history 'for a real little Arthur' and this copy is inscribed on a front free ene page to 'Arthur Frederick Warren, July 29th 1835, from his very affectionate friend, Maria Callcott.' The textblock is still quite firm but this little book LACKS BOARDS / BINDING. Marble endpapers and the reverse of the f.e.p. has hand-written notes by previous owner / seller. Free endpaper with author's inscription also has another's previous owner's name at the top edge in small, neat writing. Some quite heavy foxing to the prelims and first few pages; lighter occasional spots to pages throughout. pp. vii, 228. 14.3 x 9cm.
