A 16-page pamphlet version of an article formerly published in Blackwood's Magazine. Sewn binding at the spine. Macaulay's criticism of Croker's edition of Boswell's Life of Johnson sparked a bitter feud between the two men. From the Prefaratory note inside the front cover: 'The republication, in a cheap form, for railway reading, of Mr. Macaulay's bitter and unjust article on Mr. Croker's edition of Boswell's Life of Johnson, has induced Mr. Murray to issue in a cheap form a series of replies to the assertions and criticism of that article.' In 1941 the Ministry of Agriculture asked the New Zealand government if they would send a number of agriculturists to Great Britain to assist in the food production drive. Mr. G. A. Holmes was chosen to lead a group of six experts who arrived in this country in 1942 and this book records his two-and-a-half years' experience in Britain. pp. 128. The dust jacket is discoloured at the spine and has small rubs, chips, nicks to the edges and small loss at the head of the spine. Illustrated with copper engraved plates by Paul Fourdrinier; 26 plates in total - 2 preliminaries to Vol. I, followed by 24 numbered plates throughout the volumes. pp. [2], xxxii, 225, [3], 6 plates; [2], 256, 5 plates; [2], 304, [3], 5 plates; 251, [12] index, 5 plates; + separately paginated Homer's Battle of The Frogs and Mice by Mr. Archdeacon Parnel, corrected by Mr. Pope, bound at the back of Vol. V, pp. 24. 16.4 x 10.4cm. Some faults: Vol. I is missing pages 83-86; it does not look like they have been removed but rather that they were never bound in. Facsimiles of the missing pages provided. Vol. II - the preliminary page containing the copyright notice has a small hole (not a worming hole). Vol. III - the top quarter corner of the title page is torn and missing; pages 203 to the end of the text have a historic worming hole to the bottom corner in the margin - a single hole which gets larger towards the end of the book (text not affected). Also in Vol. III p. 299/300 has the top corner of the page missing, text IS affected. Facsimile of these two pages provided. Vol IV has a small historic worming hole through the whole textblock in the foredge margin (text not affected); there are a few other small holes and traces in the foredge margin of the last 20 pages and small holes to pastedowns. Vol. V - the front pastedown has lifted and is loose; there are light pencil scribbles to the f.e.p.; worming damage to the foredge margin of preliminary pages to p. 10; pale brown stain to the edges of pp. 41-44; small grubby brown stain to pp. 49-54; tiny worm hole through foredge margin from prelims to p. 48; Plate B. XXIII and following pages 137-139 have a brown stain in the foredge margin. Rubs and chips to extremities, some cracking to joints of volumes I and II, historic worming damage to the top of the upper joint of Vol. III. Hardback with dust jacket. First edition. War economy standard book production. Original green boards with red titles. The boards are slightly faded at the edges, with a particularly faded patch, approx. one inch in size at the head of the spine (corresponds with a tear to the dust jacket). The binding is nice and firm and pages are clean. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. There is some wrinkling to the frontispiece colour illustration. The paper quality of the frontis. illustration is quite thin which is probably the cause of the wrinkling. No other sign of wrinkling or marks to other pages. pp. 126. When Sandypaws the Rabbit was kidnapped by Bandit Rat, the folk of Fern Wood were in an uproar. They had suffered themselves from the wicked Rat, and they were sorry for poor Mrs Sandypaws, left to fend for eight little rabbits. The kind-hearted mice, Mr Tittlewit and Mr. Pippington, made a plan to foil the Rat.' And so, an Insect Zoo was created... Pale orange / cream boards, with pictorial onlay. The front board is creased down the centre, boards are generally greyed and have rubs to the spine ends. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. Some light grubby handling marks to pages (no major stains, just minor thumbing etc. and one page of text has two very pale brown stains). Several pages have small flattened creases at the top corner. There are two heavily creased / crumpled pages in the middle of the book (2 leaves, which is 4 pages). The dust jacket is worn at the edges, with some old tape repairs to the underside of the jacket and three small pieces of tape on the outside of the jacket at the spine ends and one corners. The dust jacket is bright and vibrant - it has a few small red marks towards the spine edge of the front cover, a few short tears, small chips and rubs to the edges, a few small and light marks to the back cover.
