William Blackwood & Sons Edinburgh and London 1887 Half Leather Very Good No Jacket Book 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall 
Handsomely bound in half brown leather with gilt tooling to the spine, 5 raised bands, red title panel and black volume spine label. Some rubs to edges and corners. Marbled boards, endpapers and all edges. The binding is nice and firm. In very good condition. Joints and hinges all very good. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine was a long running monthly literary journal. It began in April 1817 and, when it moved HQ to London in 1905, it became simply Blackwood's Magazine. A number of notable authors published their novels and other writings in Blackwood's; for example, George Eliot, Anthony Trollope, Margaret Oliphant, Thomas Hardy, Joseph Conrad, and many others. It ceased publication in 1980. This volume contains the first printing of part of the novel, Sarracinesa, by Francis Marion Crawford, probably the best known work of this prolific nineteenth-century author. pp. 1-876. The binding is nice and firm. Joints and hinges all very good. Contemporary armorial bookplate on the front pastedown, for Evan Charles Sutherland-Walker. There is a pale brown stain to the outer closed textblock page edges, affecting most of the textblock; just visible to the page margins at the foredges (pale marks). When his body is found in a boat drifting in a pond in Montauk, New York, his best friend, the literary critic Philip Anders, begins to reread his work in order to prepare a eulogy. This rereading, along with other clues, convinces the critic that his friend has committed a terrible crime, and that it was as punishment for this crime that Wells took his own life. 302269
