The History of Banbury: including copious historical and antiquarian notices of the neighbourhood. Beesley, Alfred Nichols and Son | printed by William Potts, Parsons St., Banbury Banbury 1841 First Edition Half Leather Good No Jacket Book 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall Hardback. Half red leather, rubbed and scuffed but still presents quite well. The joints are firm. Law Society binding, bookplate on the front pastedown, some circular stamps to pages, and presentation inscription inside. Complete with 26 plates, as required, including 2 folding maps. Plate XIII has been used as a frontispiece and the plate has cracked near the spine, from handling. All of the other plates, including the two maps, have been bound in at the back of the book. The plates all have a pale stain in a narrow margin to the edges; they are otherwise remarkably clean (Beesley plates frequently suffer from heavy foxing and discolouration). Marbled endpapers and page edges. Rather unusually this copy has an original advertisement sheet, for the publication by subscription of the book, bound into the front of the book just before page 1; rarely seen, this is a nice addition. The binding is firm and tight This is a good solid copy of the now very scarce definitive history of Banbury. pp. xvi, 668, [26] plates. A HEAVY book - a postage surcharge will apply to delivery destinations outside the UK as this book costs more to send than our standard postage rate will cover. NO additional charges for sending within the UK. 309112

Reading with Patrick, a True Story: A Teacher, A Student and the Life-Changing Power of Books Kuo, Michelle Macmillan 2017 1447286073 / 9781447286073 First UK Edition Hardcover New New Book 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall New hardback with dust jacket. RRP £16.99. First impression, UK edition. As a young English teacher keen to make a difference in the world, Michelle Kuo took a job at a tough school in the Mississippi Delta, sharing books and poetry with a young African-American teenager named Patrick and his classmates. For the first time, these kids began to engage with ideas and dreams beyond their small town, and to gain an insight into themselves that they had never had before. Two years later, Michelle left to go to law school; but Patrick began to lose his way, ending up jailed for murder. And that's when Michelle decided that her work was not done, and began to visit Patrick once a week, and soon every day, to read with him again. Reading with Patrick is an inspirational story of friendship, a coming-of-age story for both a young teacher and a student, an expansive, deeply resonant meditation on education, race and justice, and a love letter to literature and its power to transcend social barriers. pp. xxi, 296.
