Hardback. In desperate need of some TLC. The binding is POOR but nearly all of the plates are in good condition. Would benefit from a re-bind. Green cloth spine has tears. Rubs and some marks to the boards. Front endpaper removed. Name scribbled out and some tearing to the front pastedown. The binding is weak, hinges exposed in several places and a number of pages have come loose. However, nearly all of the plates are in good, clean condition. Plate 11 has a brown coin-sized mark towards the bottom of the illustration; Plate 9 has a small mark towards the top edge. A couple of other pale, minor marks to other plates. Hardback with dust jacket. The seventh Famous Five story. 5th impression; was first published in October 1948. Original red boards, with black titles. Some pale mottling (lightened patches) to the pastedowns suggest book may have been affected by damp though boards are clean - no evidence of damp to the outsides of the boards. No names or inscriptions inside but there are initials written in ink at the top of the dust jacket front flap. Small strip of paper stuck on the half-title page (I almost missed this as the paper colour is very nearly the same as the page). The binding is firm and inner hinges are very good. Foxing to the outer closed textblock page edges and to the first and last few pages. A forwards lean to the spine. pp. 192. The dust jacket is worn at the edges, with short tears, creasing, chips and small loss including approx. 0.5cm loss at the head of the spine. Some foxing to the dust jacket. Her first novel Richard Chatterton V.C. was published in 1916, after which she produced almost 150 titles. Although Ayres was known primarily for her romantic novels, she also wrote serials for the Daily Chronicle and Daily Mirror, as well as motion pictures in the United States and England. The dust jacket is rubbed and chipped at the edges, with some short nicks and small chips and general creasing. It generally appears faded but I think the printing is just a less vibrant colour than the earlier Hodder editions.
