Comprises a single Punch volume, no. 137 for the second half of the year 1909. Original maroon cloth binding, with gilt stamped Mr Punch and black floral scroll pattern on the upper board. Blind stamped floral scroll pattern to the lower board and gilt caricatures and titles to the spine. The binding is faded at the spine, there is a one inch split to the cloth in the centre of the spine, and cloth is bruised and rubbed at the spine ends. Corners rubbed and top corners bumped. A 16-page pamphlet version of an article formerly published in Blackwood's Magazine. Sewn binding at the spine. Macaulay's criticism of Croker's edition of Boswell's Life of Johnson sparked a bitter feud between the two men. From the Prefaratory note inside the front cover: 'The republication, in a cheap form, for railway reading, of Mr. Macaulay's bitter and unjust article on Mr. Croker's edition of Boswell's Life of Johnson, has induced Mr. Murray to issue in a cheap form a series of replies to the assertions and criticism of that article.' Handsomely bound in half brown leather with gilt tooling to the spine, 5 raised bands, red title panel and black volume spine label. Some rubs to edges and corners and a rub / abrasion to the marbling of the front board. The spine has darkened in places - has some slightly black marks. Marbled boards, endpapers and all edges. The binding is nice and firm. Joints and hinges all very good. Contemporary armorial bookplate on the front pastedown, for Evan Charles Sutherland-Walker. There is a pale brown stain to the outer closed textblock page edges, affecting most of the textblock; just visible to the page margins at the foredges (pale marks). Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine was a long running monthly literary journal. It began in April 1817 and, when it moved HQ to London in 1905, it became simply Blackwood's Magazine. A number of notable authors published their novels and other writings in Blackwood's; for example, George Eliot, Anthony Trollope, Margaret Oliphant, Thomas Hardy, Joseph Conrad, and many others. It ceased publication in 1980. This volume contains the first printing of the first part of the novel, Miss Marjoribanks, by Mrs Oliphant, one of her best known and most successful novels. pp. 1-778. A lovely vintage set of miniature books housed in a cardboard 'cupboard' display box. Publication date not stated but is c. 1965. 12 books in total and they are: The Odd Jobbers; Mr. Hedgehog; The Flower Show; Wally Weasel; The Mouse Family; Ferdy's Speedboat; Fanny Ferret; Fun-Fair; Victor Vole; A Camping Holiday; Lizzie Lamb; The Cat Family. The books have printed card covers, a single staple binding, and have some colour and black and white illustrations. Some of the books have light creasing to the pages and covers and one book has a mark inside the front cover, as though a sticker or label has been removed. The Mouse Family has had its original staple removed and a new one neatly applied. Ferdy's Speedboat has the word written in red pen just inside the front cover. A lovely vintage novelty set. The other volumes are Introduction and Translation, and Domesday Book Studies. All three volumes are bumped at the base of the spine and the Introduction and Translation volume has two little red pen squiggles on a page towards the back of the book. If not for the pen marks I would describe the volumes as Very Good condition. The slipcase is poor, missing one end of the case. The spine joints are firm but there are some cracks: a light superficial surface cracks to the leather at the top and bottom of the upper board joint; deeper cracks to the top and bottom of the lower board joints and to the bottom of the front board joint.
