Handsomely bound in half brown leather with gilt tooling to the spine, 5 raised bands, red title panel and black volume spine label. Some rubs to edges and corners. Marbled boards, endpapers and all edges. The binding is nice and firm. In very good condition. Joints and hinges all very good. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine was a long running monthly literary journal. It began in April 1817 and, when it moved HQ to London in 1905, it became simply Blackwood's Magazine. A number of notable authors published their novels and other writings in Blackwood's; for example, George Eliot, Anthony Trollope, Margaret Oliphant, Thomas Hardy, Joseph Conrad, and many others. It ceased publication in 1980. This volume contains the first printing of part of the novel, Sarracinesa, by Francis Marion Crawford, probably the best known work of this prolific nineteenth-century author. pp. 1-876. Comprises a single Punch volume, no. 137 for the second half of the year 1909. Original maroon cloth binding, with gilt stamped Mr Punch and black floral scroll pattern on the upper board. Blind stamped floral scroll pattern to the lower board and gilt caricatures and titles to the spine. The binding is faded at the spine, there is a one inch split to the cloth in the centre of the spine, and cloth is bruised and rubbed at the spine ends. Corners rubbed and top corners bumped. A couple of very light marks to the boards. The binding is firm; there is an approx. 2 inch crack to the front inner hinge. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. Copy of Sir Henry Bargrave Deane, an old Wykehamist, (1848-1919) and bears his bookplate on the front pastedown. Inner hinges lightly cracked and the first section of pages feels a little loose. Binding is otherwise quite firm. Frontispiece illustration with tissue guard. A stain to the top outer closed textblock page edge (edges only; the pages themselves remain clean) and two small pale stains to the edges of the rear endpaper. Comprises a single Punch volume, no. 130 for the first half of the year 1906. Original burgundy red cloth binding with plain boards and simple gilt titles to the spine. The binding is firm and hinges are good. The cloth is faded at the spine, with minor rubs to spine ends and bottom corners lightly bumped. Pages are mostly in very good, clean condition. There is a small black ink smudge on p. 188 and three leaves have old paper repairs to the margins (neatly done), plus there is a c. two inch tear in the edge of p.223/4. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. Some light foxing to endpapers and pastedowns. Some issues are MISSING from this volume.
