16 A Display of Heraldry: Manifesting a more easie access to the Knowledge thereof than hath been hitherto published by any, through the benefit of Method; Whereunto it is now reduced by the Study and Industry of John Guillim; Late Pursuivant of Arms. [Fifth Edition]. To which is added a Treatise of Honour Military and Civil, by Capt. John Logan (Analogia Honorum: Or, A Treatise of Honour and Nobility, According to the Laws and Customs of England.
Guillim, John Printed by S. Roycroft for R. Blome London 1679 Leather Bound Good Book Folio - over 12 - 15" tall
Fifth edition. Contemporary calf boards, worn and chipped at the edges, rebacked spine and corners, with new cream coloured endpapers and pastedowns.. Not recently rebacked but I would estimate this was done c. 40 years ago. Rubs to the edges of the spine, spine ends, extremities. The binding is firm and sound. pp. frontis, [xii, including title page], 1-317, [ix]; Analogia Honorum (1677) [ii], 181, [ix]. All plates present as per Lowndes [73 plates], plus there are three additional portrait plates: 1. The Rt. Hon. Earl of Craven; 2. The Most Noble George Duke, Marquess and Earl of Buckingham, &c.; 3. Henry Somerset, Marques and Earl of Worcester, &c. 76 plates in total. 37.5cm. Portrait engravings are nice and clear and well-pressed. Guillim's Display of Heraldry contains hundreds of examples of arms throughout the text. One leaf is misbound - in the Honorum pp139-140 is bound in after pp. 140-141. One page in the Guillim is misnumbered; p. 204 is numbered p. 604. There is quite a lot of hand-colouring to the first section (Guillim) with a few touches of colour to the second part (not extensive). Most of the colouring is solely in yellow and quite neatly done. In the Guillim colouring is most significant on pages 18, 20, 24, 30-31, 35, 40-41, 43-44, 47-56, 58-70, 74, 77, 80, 85-94. Up to p. 175 colouring is solely in yellow; pages 176-77 have red and yellow colouring. After that, just yellow resumes (less frequently than in earlier pages). There is a little ink marginalia in the Honorum, p. 171. The Honorum has quite long tears to the bottom edge of p. 143-144, tear to bottom edge of one of the Achievements of Esqrs plates, and long tear to the top edge of another Achievements of Esqurs plates; also a long, partially repaired tear (old but neat repair) to the bottom edge of p. 79-80. In the Guillim, a tear to the bottom margin only of p. 123-124, some black smudge marks in the margins of p. 112, a few tiny burn holes or scorch marks to handful of pages; p. 57-58, 81-82, 109-110, 197-198; plus the same to just a couple of pages in the second half (Honorum). Overall a good, well-bound, solid and complete copy. Please contact us if you have enquiries or require further photographs. POSTAGE: A large and heavy volume. No additional postage charges to send within the UK mainland; UK islands and N. Ireland please ask for a postage quote - an additional fee will be necessary. Overseas postage will be much higher than our standard rate is likely to be expensive - please enquire if you would like a quote. A discount on postage is available if you would like to collect from our shop premises in N. Oxfordshire - please enquire. 105564

2 Volume first edition set; Volume I published 12th May 1786. Volume II published 7th June 1788. Uniform volumes. Full tan calf. Spines sympathetically rebacked in matching morocco. Volume II stands just a fraction taller on the shelf than volume I. Spines gilt in imitation compartments, no raised bands, original title panels laid on. Marbled endpapers. Text blocks are clean and bright with only minimal age spotting and discolouration. Plate 7 in volume I has an unevenly trimmed foredge (just the very edge of the page, illustration not affected). In volume II p.62/3 has a torn bottom corner (no text affected, just loss to the margin) and a couple of short marginal tears to p.1/2. v. II has silk ribbon page marker present but unattached. Corners rubbed, exposing board at corners and there are some scuffs to the rear board of v. II. Errors in paging: v. I, 367-368 repeated in numbering (text is different, just numbering repeated); v. II, 297 numbered 293. Volume I: pp. vi, 426, 427-434 [Index], 1-40 [Appendices I-IX] + Appendix X: iv, 5-40. Appendix X has its own title page, A General and Compleat List-Military of every Commission-Officer of Horse and Foot, now Commanding His Majesties Land-Forces of England.. etc. Volume II: pp. 352, vi [description of plates in v. II], [10 - Index & placement of cuts]. Each volume has engraved frontispiece, title pages with vignette engravings, plus a further 78 copper-engraved plates across the two volumes depicting infantry battle dress, weaponry, arms and armour: 14 plates in v. I and 66 in v. II. The engraving is excellent quality. The frontis. of v. II has some sympathetic restoration - two long heavy creases have been reinforced - one on the underside and one in the margin on both sides - with what appears to be a near invisible acid-free tissue repair. 29 x 23cm. These are very good volumes, sympathetically restored, handsome and strong bindings; will add to any collection. Francis Grose [c. 1731-1791] was a renowned English antiquary and militia man, best known for his 1772 Antiquities of England and Wales and also written about by his friend Robert Burns in the poem, Epigram on Francis Grose the Antiquary. This set is VERY LARGE AND HEAVY - a significant surcharge will apply to international orders as this set will cost a great deal more to send than our standard rate will cover.
