1 A Mile of River
Allnatt, Judith Doubleday 2008 0385613067 / 9780385613064 First Edition Hardback Very Good Fine 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
Original black boards. Both the book and dust jacket are in excellent, condition but the outer closed textblock edges have darkened / tanned a little. First printing. Not previously owned. Clean, tight, unmarked and unread. 285pp. It is 1976 and England is suffocating. The long, dry spring has given way to a summer of severe drought, with standpipes in the streets and a rallying cry to 'save water, share a bath!' For the farmers, life has become a living hell - a daily struggle to make ends meet. The fields are tinder dry, the earth is dusty and scorched and the rivers are drying up to a trickle.Jess and Tom live on a remote farm in the English countryside with their increasingly difficult and brutal father, Henry. Their mother, Sylvie, walked out years before and Jess is struggling with the role of mother figure to Tom, as well as skivvy and hired hand for her father. Jess just wants to be a normal teenager, to go to dances and kiss boys, to take her exams and dream of a future far away from milking cows and ploughing fields. Daydreaming about her mother's return, Jess discovers Sylvie's old diary and begins to uncover the shocking truth about her disappearance. As the drought grips ever tighter, as the water level of the river begins to drop, the menace in the air builds until it reaches boiling point, with a confrontation between Jess and her father that has devastating consequences. The dust jacket is supplied by us in a loose protective clear archival film sleeve. This does not adhere to the book or jacket in any way and it protects the jacket against wear. 037345

(v) 'The Several Declarations Made In Council Concerning the Birth of the Prince of Wales' (1688). 7 The School of Night
Bayard, Louis John Murray 2011 1848542186 / 9781848542181 First Edition Hardcover New New Book 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall
New first edition, first printing. Not previously owned. Both the book and dust jacket are in excellent, fine condition. RRP. 17.99. 338pp. A shared quest and a mysterious cabal, four centuries apart. When Henry Cavendish attends the funeral of an old friend, the last thing he expects is to be given a business proposition. A handsome sum to retrieve a document that was in his friend's possession when he died - a letter from Sir Walter Raleigh. Henry accepts the challenge, despite severe misgivings about his sinister new employer. Four centuries earlier, in Elizabethan England, another quest is playing out. Thomas Harriot, once a member of the mysterious School of Night, a group whose members included the toast of Elizabethan society, has shut himself off from the world. Working day and night, he devotes himself secretly to his experiments. As both searches deepen, the two men realise that there are forces at work against them. Harriot's work is threatened by discovery and Henry's search becomes a deadly one, when someone close to him dies in mysterious circumstances. The School of Night is the story of a quest that spans centuries, of alliances forged in unexpected circumstances and of men who will stop at nothing to get what they want. The dust jacket is supplied by us in a loose protective clear archival film sleeve. This does not adhere to the book or jacket in any way and it protects the jacket against wear. 300726

Heavy foxing to the outer closed textblock page edges and foxing to the endpapers, pastedowns, and to pages throughout. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. pp. xiv, 114 + 32 pages of publisher's lists. A different Brian Cook dust jacket design to later editions. Rubs to the dust jacket edges and some short tears, which a previous owner has repaired neatly with paper tape to the underside of the dust jacket. Spine of the dust jacket is faded. Top corner of the front flap of the dust jacket is price clipped. The dust jacket is supplied by us in a loose protective clear archival film sleeve. This does not adhere to the book or jacket in any way and it protects the jacket against wear. (Photographed without the film sleeve, to minimise reflection). 309396
