10 Pleasures of Nature: A Literary Anthology
Hardyment, Christina (selected by) The British Library London 2016 0712357688 / 9780712357685 Soft cover New Book 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall
New softback. RRP. 12.99. 224pp. From Leonardo da Vinci on the shifting colours of the sky to Charlotte Bronte on the wild moors of Yorkshire, and from DH Lawrence inhabiting the mind of the indomitable tortoise to the intrepid Isabella Bird climbing a Hawaiian volcano, this unusual anthology showcases many voices - lyrical, awestruck, often deeply reflective. The texts gathered here, many accompanied by rarely seen artwork from early editions, are all grounded in close observation and real love for landscape, and reveal the tradition of nature writing to be deep-rooted and infinitely varied. 305857

12 Bookworm: A Memoir of Childhood Reading
Mangan, Lucy Square Peg | Vintage 2018 0224098853 / 9780224098854 Hardcover New New Book 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall
Brand new. Hardback with dust jacket. 5th impression. When Lucy Mangan was little, stories were everything. They opened up new worlds and cast light on all the complexities she encountered in this one. She was whisked away to Narnia - and Kirrin Island - and Wonderland. She ventured down rabbit holes and womble burrows into midnight gardens and chocolate factories. She wandered the countryside with Milly-Molly-Mandy, and played by the tracks with the Railway Children. With Charlotte's Web she discovered Death and with Judy Blume it was Boys. No wonder she only left the house for her weekly trip to the library or to spend her pocket money on amassing her own at home. In Bookworm, Lucy revisits her childhood reading with wit, love and gratitude. She relives our best-beloved books, their extraordinary creators, and looks at the thousand subtle ways they shape our lives. She also disinters a few forgotten treasures to inspire the next generation of bookworms and set them on their way. Lucy brings the favourite characters of our collective childhoods back to life - prompting endless re-readings, rediscoveries, and, inevitably, fierce debate - and brilliantly uses them to tell her own story, that of a born, and unrepentant, bookworm. pp. 322. The dust jacket is supplied by us in a loose protective clear archival film sleeve. This does not adhere to the book or jacket in any way and it protects the jacket against wear. 308539

Hardback, with dust jacket. In excellent, fine condition. Signed, without inscription / dedication on the title page. A super copy. pp. 358. First impression. When Samuel Godwin, a young and naive art tutor, accepts a job with the Farrow family at their majestic home, little does he expect to come across such a web of secrets and lies. His two tutees are as different as chalk and cheese - the beautiful younger sister Marianne, full of flightiness and nervous imagination, and Juliana, oddly sensible and controlled. Assisted by their elusive governess, Charlotte Agnew, Samuel begins to uncover slowly why Marianne is so emotionally fragile. But his discoveries lead to revenge and betrayal - and lives all around are turned upside down as life and death combat each other for supremacy. Linda Newbery has written a novel in diary style, combining different voices and a different century with her usual brilliance and ease. These are characters full of the same passions as our own today, while living in a less familiar and fascinating time. 307194
