Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, Vol. CXLI January to June 1887 William Blackwood & Sons Edinburgh and London 1887 Half Leather Very Good No Jacket Book 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall Handsomely bound in half brown leather with gilt tooling to the spine, 5 raised bands, red title panel and black volume spine label. Some rubs to edges and corners. Marbled boards, endpapers and all edges. The binding is nice and firm. In very good condition. Joints and hinges all very good. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine was a long running monthly literary journal. It began in April 1817 and, when it moved HQ to London in 1905, it became simply Blackwood's Magazine. A number of notable authors published their novels and other writings in Blackwood's; for example, George Eliot, Anthony Trollope, Margaret Oliphant, Thomas Hardy, Joseph Conrad, and many others. It ceased publication in 1980. This volume contains the first printing of part of the novel, Sarracinesa, by Francis Marion Crawford, probably the best known work of this prolific nineteenth-century author. pp. 1-876. HEAVY book - a postage surcharge will apply to orders with a delivery address outside the UK mainland, as this book costs more to send than our standard postage rate will cover. Breviarium Romanum Ex Decreto Sacrosancti Concilii Tridentini restitutum, B. PII V. Pontificis Maximi Jussu Editum, Clementis VIII. & Urbani VIII. Auctoritate recognitum; In Quatuor Anni Tempora divisum. Pars Hiemalis. Sumptibus Pauli Balleonii Venetiis 1707 Leather Bound Fair Book 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall Breviarium Romanum 1707. The binding is in good condition but with some historic worming holes to the pastedowns and, to a lesser extent, endpapers. Worming is not invasive but there are some holes to a block of text towards the back of the book, approx. p. cxlx onwards - a small single hole to the first few pages, then a double hole; pages clxxxi-ccxviii have a slightly larger hole which partly obscures letters in the last two lines of text. There is a long repaired tear to page 225/226 - this is quite neat; there is a small amount of loss to the words in the bottom margin corner, affecting the bottom two lines of text. A few other minor repairs to pages. Four engraved illustrations including frontispiece. Black and red text in two columns on the page. Some pages are loose and a number of others are loosening. This copy would benefit from some careful restoration. Page edges marbled. pp. [16], 624, ccxliv. 24cm. Ribbon page marker is present but fragile. A HEAVY book - a postage surcharge will apply to delivery destinations outside the UK as this book costs more to send than our standard postage rate will cover. NO additional charges for sending within the UK. 309094

On the Burning of Books Baker, Kenneth Unicorn London 2016 1910787116 / 9781910787113 First Edition Hardcover New New Book 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall First impression. New hardback, in excellent fine condition. RRP. £25.00. pp. vi, 266. Ranging politically from Ancient China to the Nazis, from Animal Farm to Chairman Mao; religiously, from the Spanish destruction of the Aztec civilisation to Bloody Mary, from Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses to bibles in Islamist strongholds today; personally, from Samuel Pepys and Lord Byron to Dickens's letters, Hardy's poems, Burton's translations, and Philip Larkin's diaries.Alongside these telling examples are chapters on burning in war, accidental burning, royal burning - and lucky escapes. Baker reveals that while books, diaries and letters can be burnt, as a result of the invention of the printing press in the 16th century, very rarely can their content be expunged from the written record in history - the 'delete' button did not delete. Book burning today survives as a symbol, usually by desperate regimes, dictators and religious fanatics to impress the naive, warn the dissenter and rally the faithful. The dust jacket is supplied by us in a loose protective clear archival film sleeve. This does not adhere to the book or jacket in any way and it protects the jacket against wear.
