6 Shakespeare and Company: A History of the Rag and Bone Shop of the Heart
Halverson, Krista (edited by); with a foreword by Jeanette Winterson and an epilogue by Sylvia Whitman Shakespeare and Company Paris 2016 9791096101009 Hardcover New Book 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall
New hardback, shrinkwrapped. RRP 24.95. 384pp. George Whitman opened his bookstore in a tumbledown 16th-century building just across the Seine from Notre-Dame in 1951, a decade after the original Shakespeare and Company had closed. Run by Sylvia Beach, it had been the meeting place for the Lost Generation and the first publisher of James Joyce's Ulysses. (This book includes an illustrated adaptation of Beach's memoir.) Since Whitman picked up the mantle, Shakespeare and Company has served as a home-away-from-home for many celebrated writers, from Jorge Luis Borges to Ray Bradbury, A.M. Homes to Dave Eggers, as well as for young authors and poets. Visitors are invited not only to read the books in the library and to share a pot of tea, but sometimes also to live in the shop itself - all for free. More than 30,000 people have stayed at Shakespeare and Company, fulfilling Whitman's vision of a socialist utopia masquerading as a bookstore. Through the prism of the shop's history, the book traces the lives of literary expats in Paris from 1951 to the present, touching on the Beat Generation, civil rights, May '68 and the feminist movement. A HEAVY book - a postage surcharge will apply to delivery destinations outside the UK as this book costs more to send than our standard postage rate will cover. NO additional charges for sending within the UK. 306864

18 Our Church: A Personal History of the Church of England
Scrutton, Roger Atlantic Books London 2012 1848871988 / 9781848871984 Hardcover New New Book 8vo - over 7 - 9" tall
New hardback - in excellent, fine condition. RRP. 20.00. For most people in England today, the church is simply the empty building at the end of the road, visited for the first time, if at all, when dead. It offers its sacraments to a population that lives without rites of passage, and which regards the National Health Service rather than the National Church as its true spiritual guardian. In Our Church, Scruton argues that the Anglican Church is the forlorn trustee of an architectural and artistic inheritance that remains one of the treasures of European civilization. He contends that it is a still point in the centre of English culture and that its defining texts, the King James Bible and the Book of Common Prayer are the sources from which much of our national identity derives. At once an elegy to a vanishing world and a clarion call to recognize Anglicanism's continuing relevance, Our Church is a graceful and persuasive book. The dust jacket is supplied by us in a loose protective clear archival film sleeve. This does not adhere to the book or jacket in any way and it protects the jacket against wear. 302054
