Hardback. Original blue cloth. The boards are worn and marked - generally grubby, darkened at the spine, with fraying to the cloth at the spine ends, a c. 2cm split to the rear joint at the base of the spine and rubs and bumps to the corners. The front pastedown has plain paper pasted over a previous owner's bookplate (you can just see the bookplate underneath). No other names or inscriptions. A few minor grubby handling marks to page edges / margins (just a few, not extensive). The binding is reasonably firm. pp. 410. An acceptable reading copy of this scarce novel. 307299

A uniform matching set, bound in green cloth, with gilt-stamped decoration and titles to the spines. 11 of 12 volumes - Wuthering Heights (published as a single volume) is absent. Most bindings are faded and a little worn appearance - most volumes have light marks to the boards; The Life of Charlotte Bronte has more significant marks to the boards and The Professor has a small dark stain to the front board. Volume 2 of Villette and Volume 2 of Jane Eyre have a slightly darker green binding and Volume 2 of Villette has a gilt top edge (the only volume with a gilt edge). All volumes are bruised at the spine ends and corners and several volumes have frayed cloth at the spine ends. Foxing to endpapers, pastedowns and scattered foxing to pages. Foredges deckled / untrimmed. Wildfell Hall pp. 354, 347; Shirley pp. 458, 471 vol. Not only was the Castello di Maniace the seat of a dukedom, but the estate had been one of Sicily's greatest mediaeval abbeys and played a significant part in the island's past.
