Comprises Punch volumes 102 and 103 bound together in one volume - the full year of 1892. Half tan calf binding. Spine gilt in six compartments, with raised bands. Marbled boards. Some rubs to the edges and some surface rubs to the boards. All four corners are lightly bumped. The top two corners are rubbed, just exposing board at the corner tips. The joints are good but there are superficial surface cracks to the leather at the spine ends of the lower board. Inner hinges are very good. Lovely brown marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Very small binders mark for John Bumpus, Oxford Street. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. Pale staining to the spine edges and to the bottom edges of both boards, next to the spine. Pale stain to the bottom edges next to the spine of the first couple and last couple of pages (minor marks). All 26 plates are bound in at the back of the book - heavy foxing and browning to all of the plates, as is usual with a Beesley. A few very light pencil marks / notes in the text (just a few). First edition thus, first impressions of these luxury limited edition Penguin Classics novels. The full set of six luxury bindings designed for Penguin by Bill Amberg. 1,000 copies of each were produced. The ISBN number given is for Breakfast at Tiffany's; the other volumes have separate ISBN numbers. Soft bound in vegetable tanned buffalo calf, with matching hand-tied leather tag-style bookmark bearing the name and author of the book. The skins used in the binding of these Bill Amberg editions were taken from 'fallen animals' - i.e. they died from natural causes - and were sourced from India's premium calf tannery. Made using traditional ecological methods, where the water used is recycled after filtering through reed beds. This creates leather that improves with every use, the grain and sheen brightening continually over time. Presented wrapped in Penguin / Bill Amberg tissue in a sturdy blond card box. Paper wrap-around titles slip over the box. A full set of these superb collector's editions. The only visible flaw is in the form of some small indentations to the slipcase wraparound of The Big Sleep. All volumes are still shrinkwrapped and as new. These separate volumes are uniformly bound in a handsome red morocco with red cloth boards, six gilt ruled spine compartments, five raised bands. Top edges are gilt. Minor rubs. An attractive and sturdy pair. The pair belonged to Hermione Lady Cobbold (nee Bulwer-Lytton) and were given to her by her mother on the occasion of her 15th birthday. The inscription inside each volume reads 'August 31st 1920, Hermione Lytton, from Mother'. Both volumes have some darkening to the edges of the endpapers. Both have a frontis. portrait with tissue guard. The Matthew Arnold volume has a very pale stain to the bottom edge of the front pastedown, endpaper and following free page. All five volumes are in good condition. All lack dust jackets and are rubbed at the spine ends and corners, with lighter rubs to edges. Bound in quarter black cloth, with printed paper sides. The sides are a patterned paper by Curwen Press, designed by Sarah Nechamkin. They would have had dust jackets when published and may have been sold as a boxed set (there was a boxed set of the 6 Jane Austen titles produced but these are without a box). Emma is the missing volume from this set. Sense and Sensibility is a 1st Novel Library edition, of 1948, pp. viii, 374; Pride and Prejudice is a 1st Novel Library edition of 1949, pp. viii, 386, has a small pale stain to the outer closed textblock foredge; Northanger Abbey is a first Novel Library edition of 1948, pp. viii, 236; Persuasion is a reprint of 1951, first published in the Novel Library edition 1947, pp. vi, 254; Mansfield Park is a 1st Novel Library edition of 1949, pp. viii, 479, has a very small brown stain near the top edge of the front cover. A complete run of the first 25 volumes from the first issue, Vol. I September - December, 1901. Each volume contains 4 months and each year comprises three bound volumes. All 25 volumes are uniformly bound in a mid-brown quarter morocco with brown cloth sides. Upper panels are gilt ruled. Bound by Birdsall & Son, Northampton. Some rubs to the leather. Some marks to the boards, including a noticeable spillage stain to the boards of one volume (boards only) and some mild pale biopredation marks to the boards. All joints are very good and the bindings are nice and firm. Inside, all hinges are good. Some volumes bear a contemporary bookplate for a William Arthur Durnford. Some foxing to endpapers and to the few plates with the same paper type as the endpapers. All volumes are generously illustrated throughout, including good quality plates with tissue guards. Some plates are tipped-in on different colour pages. In volume I two of these plates are on black paper and both of these black leaves have become very brittle, cracked and torn. Both black leaves are disintegrating; the illustrations themselves are unaffected. Volume 9 has a small dark ink stain on the spine. An attractive uniform set. Hardback. Half red leather, rubbed and scuffed but still presents quite well. The joints are firm. Law Society binding, bookplate on the front pastedown, some circular stamps to pages, and presentation inscription inside. Complete with 26 plates, as required, including 2 folding maps. Plate XIII has been used as a frontispiece and the plate has cracked near the spine, from handling. All of the other plates, including the two maps, have been bound in at the back of the book. The plates all have a pale stain in a narrow margin to the edges; they are otherwise remarkably clean (Beesley plates frequently suffer from heavy foxing and discolouration). Marbled endpapers and page edges. Rather unusually this copy has an original advertisement sheet, for the publication by subscription of the book, bound into the front of the book just before page 1; rarely seen, this is a nice addition. The binding is firm and tight This is a good solid copy of the now very scarce definitive history of Banbury. pp. xvi, 668, [26] plates.
