16 Biggles Makes Ends Meet
Johns, Captain W. E. ; illustrated by Leslie Stead Hodder and Stoughton Limited London 1957 First Edition Hardcover Very Good Poor Book 12mo - over 6 - 7" tall
Hardback, with poor condition dust jacket. Original red boards, with black titles and ship outline to the bottom corner of the front board. There are a few small marks to the rear board, from old sellotape repairs on the dust jacket. The boards are bright and binding firm. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. Some foxing to the outer closed textblock page edges. The pages themselves are slightly age-toned overall but not browned at the edges and overall nice and clean. Colour frontispiece illustration and 5 further colour plates. List of Biggles titles on the reverse of the half-title page ends with Biggles Takes Charge, plus 2 Omnibus titles. The dust jacket is in poor condition, though the front cover is quite clean. Long tears to the front cover spine joint and the back cover has completely detached from the spine. The long tears were all repaired by a previous owner with an acidic sellotape which had yellowed, stained the dust jacket and gone brittle with age. This brittle has now been carefully removed but brown stains where the tape used to be remain and the paper is brittle where the tape has been removed. One long tear to the underside of the jacket's back cover has had a later repair with a paper repair tape. The jacket is largely complete - chips to edges and corners. Rubs to the edges and some creasing. Printed price on the front dust jacket flap of 8s 6d. Brief synopsis on the front dust jacket flap, Biggles Omnibus editions advertised on the rear dust jacket flap and the back cover has a list of Biggles titles, to no. 46, plus Comrades in Arms. The dust jacket is supplied by us in a loose protective clear archival film sleeve. This does not adhere to the book or jacket in any way and protects the jacket against wear. 105975

17 Biggles Sweeps the Desert
Johns, Captain W. E. ; illustrated by Leslie Stead Hodder and Stoughton Limited London 1948 First Edition Hardcover Good Good Book 12mo - over 6 - 7" tall
Hardback, with dust jacket. First edition; first printed August 1948. Original red boards with black titles and crocodile in the bottom corner of the front board. Boards are bright and clean but with a small faded pale patch to the rear board. Spine ends lightly bruised. A very slight / marginal forwards lean to the spine. The binding is nice and firm and tight. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. Would be very good except for heavy foxing to the outer closed textblock page edges and frequent spots to pages and page margins as well. The textblock has a slightly musty odour. A couple of flattened creases to the front endpaper. Two tone illustrations, including frontispiece. pp. 211, plates. A list of other W. E. Johns titles at the back of the book: Biggles list ends with this title; Worrals list ends with Worrals in the Wilds; Gimlet list ends with Gimlet's Oriental Quest; Comrades in Arms is also listed. The dust jacket is rubbed, worn and chipped at the edges, with short tears and creasing which is particularly heavy to the two flaps. List of titles on the rear dust jacket flap has blue pen tick marks against a few of the titles. Front flap has a printed price of 6/-. Back cover of the dust jacket has a synopsis of the story. A coin-sized greasy mark to the back cover of the jacket, just below the synopsis. The dust jacket is supplied by us in a loose protective clear archival film sleeve.
