Hardback, with dust jacket. A first edition copy in a slightly later, c. 1958, dust jacket. Original red boards with black titles and vignette. There is some creasing to the front board, particularly visible to the front pastedown. The spine is slightly faded and the boards are bruised at the spine ends and corners. The top corner of the front board is faded and has a small mark. A gift inscription written at the top edge of the front pastedown, dated 1955. The binding is firm. Significant foxing to endpapers and prelims in general, including title page. Foxing to the outer closed textblock page edges and occasional lighter spots to pages. From the personal library of SMITH ELY JELLIFFE and signed by him on the front endpaper and on the title page. Smith Ely Jelliffe (1866-1945) was an eminent American physician, psychiatrist and early psychoanalyst. From 1902 he owned and edited the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease and in 1913 he was founder of Psychoanalytic Review. He was regular correspondent of Freud and Jung and was one of the earliest proponents of Freudian theory in the United States. Original green cloth. Some pale mottled marks around the spine and very light pale flecks to the boards. Top edge blue. A slight forward lean to the spine. Foredges untrimmed. Binding is good and solid. Light bumps to a couple of corners. Foldout map at the back in excellent condition. The dust jacket is quite heavily rubbed and is faded at the spine. Some short nicks and small chips to the edges.
