1 The Connoisseur Magazine, An Illustrated Magazine For Collectors. Volumes 1-25 (1901-1909)
Baily, J. T. Herbert (edited by) Otto Limited [1901-1909] Carmelite House, London 1901 First Edition Quarter Leather Very Good Book 4to - over 9 - 12" tall
A complete run of the first 25 volumes from the first issue, Vol. I September - December, 1901. Each volume contains 4 months and each year comprises three bound volumes. All 25 volumes are uniformly bound in a mid-brown quarter morocco with brown cloth sides. Upper panels are gilt ruled. Bound by Birdsall & Son, Northampton. Some rubs to the leather. Some marks to the boards, including a noticeable spillage stain to the boards of one volume (boards only) and some mild pale biopredation marks to the boards. All joints are very good and the bindings are nice and firm. Inside, all hinges are good. Some volumes bear a contemporary bookplate for a William Arthur Durnford. Some foxing to endpapers and to the few plates with the same paper type as the endpapers. All volumes are generously illustrated throughout, including good quality plates with tissue guards. Some plates are tipped-in on different colour pages. In volume I two of these plates are on black paper and both of these black leaves have become very brittle, cracked and torn. Both black leaves are disintegrating; the illustrations themselves are unaffected. Volume 9 has a small dark ink stain on the spine. An attractive uniform set. DELIVERY: No extra charges for sending within the UK MAINLAND. An extra fee may be necessary for UK islands and highlands, including N. Ireland. INTERNATIONAL DELIVERY may not available for this set due to size and weight - please contact us BEFORE ORDERING. There will be significant extra postage charges for international orders. A discount on postage is available for collection from our North Oxfordshire shop premises. More photographs can be sent on request. 104586

20 Dangerous Work: Diary of an Arctic Adventure
Doyle, Sir Arthur Conan ; edited by Jon Lellenberg and Daniel Stashower British Library 2012 0712358641 / 9780712358644 First Thus Hard Cover New New 4to - over 9" - 12" tall
New hardback, with dust jacket. Both in excellent fine condition. RRP 25.00. In February 1880, when Arthur Conan Doyle was only twenty years old, he embarked upon 'the first real outstanding adventure in my life,' seven months as a ship's surgeon on an Arctic whaler. The voyage took the young Conan Doyle into unknown regions and plunged him into dangerous and bloody work on the ice floes of the Arctic seas. His unforgettable adventure was echoed in a number of his early landmarks as a writer. It provides a vivid account of the coming of age of the young man who would go on to create Sherlock Holmes, and of a life at sea that no longer exists. This book will feature a facsimile of this remarkable diary, with a transcript, as well as several non-fiction and fiction pieces based on the experience, including the Sherlock Holmes story 'The Adventure of the Black Peter.' It will also include photographs of the ship, its captain, and young Conan Doyle on deck. The publication of this unknown diary will be welcomed by all fans of Arthur Conan Doyle. 368pp. The dust jacket is supplied by us in a loose protective clear archival film sleeve. This does not adhere to the book or jacket in any way and it protects the jacket against wear. New paperback. RRP. 14.99. A unique work of fiction, combining a horror story encapsulated in mystery, stark realism and fantasy, and thick with ironic humour throughout. The narrator of the story, working in the darkened and dusty milieu of a renowned international second hand book store, could hardly be committed to a more sedate trade, when through business contacts he is suddenly whisked away on a series of life-threatening adventures. 232pp. 302097
