21 Frankenstein, Or The Modern Prometheus. The 1818 Text
Shelley, Mary ; edited with an introduction and notes by Nick Groom Oxford University Press 2018 0198814046 / 9780198814047 First Thus Hard Cover New No jacket Book 8vo - over 7¾
New hardback. White cloth. RRP. £14.99. First impression of this new edition. By the dim and yellow light of the moon, as it forced its way through the window-shutters, I beheld the wretch-the miserable monster whom I had created. He held up the curtain of the bed; and his eyes, if eyes they may be called, were fixed on me. His jaws opened... Frankenstein is the most celebrated horror story ever written. It tells the dreadful tale of Victor Frankenstein, a visionary young student of natural philosophy, who discovers the secret of life. In the grip of his obsession he constructs a being from dead body parts, and animates this creature. The results, for Victor and for his family, are catastrophic. Written when Mary Shelley was just eighteen, Frankenstein was inspired by the ghost stories and vogue for Gothic literature that fascinated the Romantic writers of her time. She transformed these supernatural elements into an epic parable that warned against the threats to humanity posed by accelerating technological progress. Published for the 200th anniversary, this edition, based on the original 1818 text, explains in detail the turbulent intellectual context in which Shelley was writing, and also investigates how her novel has since become a byword for controversial practices in science and medicine, from manipulating ecosystems to vivisection and genetic modification. As an iconic study of power, creativity, and, ultimately, what it is to be human, Frankenstein continues to shape our thinking inprofound ways to this day. 223 x 142 x 30 (mm). pp. 226. BK0003

27 The History of English Poetry, From the Close of the Eleventh to the Commencement of the Eighteenth Century. In Four Volumes. [Complete 4 Volume Set].
Warton, Thomas Printed for Thomas Tegg London 1824 Leather Bound Good Book 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall
Title continues: 'To Which are Prefixed Three Dissertations: 1. Of the Origin of Romantic Fiction in Europe. 2. On the Introduction of Learning into England. 3. On the Gesta Romanorum.' A new edition, carefully revised. Full gilt-ruled calf. Spines renewed, possibly for library binding in late nineteenth century / early twentieth. Each volume bears a City of Liverpool Public Libraries bookplate inside the front board, which I believe to be a Stephen Gooden design [engraver, 1892-1955]. Each bookplate has been stamped 'Withdrawn' in red ink. There are faded library catalogue numbers on the spine (were gilt; now mostly rubbed out). Small library label inside each of the rear boards: City of Liverpool Reference Library, date 1947. No further library marks. Gilt tooled spines. Morocco spine labels. The boards are quite heavily rubbed at the corners, with some scuffs to the boards, exposing back to the board in patches at the edges - in this case sounds worse than looks. Contents however are very clean. Firmly bound. Bright and clean. Very little foxing - a little to vol. III. A couple of light pencil marks in the margins (very few). Frontispiece illustration of author in volume I, with tissue guard. 1824. 4 vols. pp. 123, cclxix, 203; 520; 470; 482. Uniform. 21.5cm x 14cm. An attractive set. A VERY HEAVY book - a postage surcharge will apply to delivery destinations outside the UK mainland as this book costs more to send than our standard postage rate will cover. Small surcharge may apply to UK highlands and islands and N. Ireland; larger surcharge for overseas destinations. NO additional charges for sending within the UK mainland. 101173
