Anthony was made into a film in 1936; the film won four Academy Awards. The novel was included in Life Magazine's 1944 list of the 100 most outstanding novels of 1924-1944. Original red boards. First published in the USA in 1933, this is the first UK edition of 1944. In fair to good condition.There is a full-length crease to the spine and a slight forwards lean to the spine. Small ink spot to the bottom outer closed textblock edge. Rubs to the board edges, with some fraying and short nicks to the cloth at the spine ends and corners. Previous owner's signature on the front endpaper. Small mark to the bottom margin of a couple of pages. Some erased pencil marks to the rear pastedown. Some foxing to the endpapers and pastedowns and a small pale brown stain to the bottom edge of the rear pastedown. Light foxing and handling marks to pages but no very grubby marks to pages. The dot-to-dot puzzle on page 60 has been done in pencil; the maze puzzle on page 73 has been done very lightly in pencil; the missing words in the puzzle story competition pages 84-86 have been done in pencil; pages 104-106 have a narrow pale brown stain to the very top edge. POOR CONDITION. Original Rupert bear annual for 1937. Pictorial boards with red cloth spine. The cloth of the spine is discoloured and has several tears and the rear hinge looks re-glued by a previous owner. Extensive rubbing to the boards. Front inner hinge has been crudely strengthened by a previous owner with stiff card (not an attractive repair but a functional one). Rear inner hinge is cracked and there are further weak points to the binding. Page 13/14 is a photocopy replacement (original leaf missing). Some short tears, creasing and light marks to pages but pages are relatively clean. No writing or colouring in to pages. Page 111/112 is ragged at the edges. Small, pocket-sized, hardback Birthday book, for recording people's birthdays. Date uncertain (not stated inside); there is a gift inscription on the front endpaper dated 1931. Some foxing throughout and other brown marks to the first few pages. A few dates have names filled-in for birthdays, in different handwriting styles. Each month has a full page Margaret Tarrant colour plate - plates are generally quite clean, possibly a little greyed; July has some very pale blue stains (from a water splash I suspect) which aren't overly noticeable as they blend with the colours of the illustration. December's illustration has a small chip to the top edge of the page, a tape repair by a previous owner to the underside of the plate, approx 1.5 inch tear, and a small tape mark to the edge of the front of the illustration, next to the spine. Unpaginated. The pale blue cloth boards are generally greyed and lightly grubby (no significant stains), and are lightly rubbed at the spine ends. 13.7 x 10cm. 308794

Publication date not stated but is c. 1934 [ref. British Library]. Vintage children's board book with very thick boards, containing 14 full page colour illustrations with short inscriptions underneath. Pictorial front cover. The spine has been repaired / renewed with black cloth (looks neat at the front but the cloth hasn't been cut neatly on the rear board. The boards are very worn and rubbed. The front board has several significant chips. Both boards have some marks and scratches. Inside, the first page has a period bookseller sticker to the bottom edge and the first page has a long tear in the surface paper, the illustration which has been repaired, though there is still abrasion and loss to the illustration. The bottom 7cm of the hinge is cracked between pages 3 and 4, and p3 also has a repaired tear to the illustration. The first few pages are quite marked, with foxing. Other pages are relatively clean but several have rubs / abrasions to the bottom corners. Other titles in the series listed on the back board.
