William Blackwood & Sons Edinburgh and London 1887 Half Leather Very Good No Jacket Book 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall 
Handsomely bound in half brown leather with gilt tooling to the spine, 5 raised bands, red title panel and black volume spine label. Some rubs to edges and corners. Marbled boards, endpapers and all edges. The binding is nice and firm. In very good condition. Joints and hinges all very good. No previous owner's names or inscriptions. Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine was a long running monthly literary journal. It began in April 1817 and, when it moved HQ to London in 1905, it became simply Blackwood's Magazine. A number of notable authors published their novels and other writings in Blackwood's; for example, George Eliot, Anthony Trollope, Margaret Oliphant, Thomas Hardy, Joseph Conrad, and many others. It ceased publication in 1980. This volume contains the first printing of part of the novel, Sarracinesa, by Francis Marion Crawford, probably the best known work of this prolific nineteenth-century author. pp. 1-876. Comprises a single Punch volume, no. 162 for the first half of the year 1922. Original burgundy red cloth binding with gilt stamped Mr Punch motif and black floral scroll pattern on upper board. Blind stamped floral scroll pattern to lower board and gilt caricatures and titles to spine. The binding is firm and hinges are good. The cloth is faded at the spine, with bruising to spine ends. Corners lightly rubbed. Top edge gilt. Pages are mostly in very good, clean condition. Occasional very minor mark and a pale grubby mark on pages 181-2. Some light foxing to endpapers and pastedowns. The binding is nice and firm. Joints and hinges all very good. Contemporary armorial bookplate on the front pastedown, for Evan Charles Sutherland-Walker. There is a pale brown stain to the outer closed textblock page edges, affecting most of the textblock; just visible to the page margins at the foredges (pale marks). 3 volume set, limited to 1,000 copies. The Folios and Maps volume is hand-numbered, no. 214. Maps present and in very good condition in the front pocket of Folios and Maps. The other volumes are Introduction and Translation, and Domesday Book Studies. All three volumes are bumped at the base of the spine and the Introduction and Translation volume has two little red pen squiggles on a page towards the back of the book. If not for the pen marks I would describe the volumes as Very Good condition. The slipcase is poor, missing one end of the case. A complete run of the first 25 volumes from the first issue, Vol. I September - December, 1901. Each volume contains 4 months and each year comprises three bound volumes. All 25 volumes are uniformly bound in a mid-brown quarter morocco with brown cloth sides. Upper panels are gilt ruled. Bound by Birdsall & Son, Northampton. Some rubs to the leather. Some marks to the boards, including a noticeable spillage stain to the boards of one volume (boards only) and some mild pale biopredation marks to the boards. All joints are very good and the bindings are nice and firm. Inside, all hinges are good. Some volumes bear a contemporary bookplate for a William Arthur Durnford. Some foxing to endpapers and to the few plates with the same paper type as the endpapers. All volumes are generously illustrated throughout, including good quality plates with tissue guards. Some plates are tipped-in on different colour pages. In volume I two of these plates are on black paper and both of these black leaves have become very brittle, cracked and torn. Both black leaves are disintegrating; the illustrations themselves are unaffected. Volume 9 has a small dark ink stain on the spine. An attractive uniform set. Comprises Punch volumes 104 and 105 bound together in one volume - the full year of 1893. Half tan calf binding. Spines gilt in six compartments, with raised bands. Marbled boards. Some rubs to the edges, light rubs, a scratch to the surface leather of the top corner of the upper board. All four corners are lightly bumped; the top two corners are rubbed, exposing board at the corner tips. The joints are good and sturdy but there are superficial surface cracks to the upper joint, at the head and tail. Both hinges are very good. Lovely brown marbled endpapers. Very small binders mark for John Bumpus, Oxford Street. No previous owner's names, inscriptions or other marks. Pages are in lovely, bright and clean, condition. This rag book is pristine and the cloth stiff and feels starched. No publication date. This particular title was printed by Dean's between 1932-1936 so it falls within those dates. 137 x 112mm. Pinked (serrated) edges. Orange stitching to the spine. Printed in 8 colours. With 8 cloth pages including the covers. Folded advertising leaflet for Dean's Rag Books loosely enclosed. This title includes images from two slightly earlier Dean's titles - no. 263 Wee Friends, illustrated by Vera Bowyer, and no. 274 Jolly Jingles, illustrated by Phyllis Cooper. As fresh, bright and clean as the day it was printed - very uncommon in this condition. 308813

Hardback. Half red leather, rubbed and scuffed but still presents quite well. The joints are firm. Law Society binding, bookplate on the front pastedown, some circular stamps to pages, and presentation inscription inside. Complete with 26 plates, as required, including 2 folding maps. Plate XIII has been used as a frontispiece and the plate has cracked near the spine, from handling. All of the other plates, including the two maps, have been bound in at the back of the book. The plates all have a pale stain in a narrow margin to the edges; they are otherwise remarkably clean (Beesley plates frequently suffer from heavy foxing and discolouration). Marbled endpapers and page edges. Rather unusually this copy has an original advertisement sheet, for the publication by subscription of the book, bound into the front of the book just before page 1; rarely seen, this is a nice addition. Comprises a single Punch volume, no. 140 for the first half of the year 1911. Original maroon cloth binding, with gilt stamped Mr Punch and black floral scroll pattern on the upper board. Blind stamped floral scroll pattern to the lower board and gilt caricatures and titles to the spine. The binding is very slightly faded at the spine. Minor bruising to spine ends. Hinges very good. No previous owner's names, inscriptions or other marks. Some light foxing to the first few pages only; a few pages have short tears / nicks in the margins (margins only, not text); page 21/22 has a snag / tear in the margin next to the spine (again, margin only); a small section of pages (one issue) has come free from the last stitch of the binding (still perfectly soundly bound, just loose at the bottom stitch / bottom of the page); small brown mark affecting pages 178-190.
