A Display of Heraldry: Manifesting a more easie access to the Knowledge thereof than hath been hitherto published by any, through the benefit of Method; Whereunto it is now reduced by the Study and Industry of John Guillim; Late Pursuivant of Arms. [Fifth Edition]. To which is added a Treatise of Honour Military and Civil, by Capt. John Logan (Analogia Honorum: Or, A Treatise of Honour and Nobility, According to the Laws and Customs of England. Guillim, John Printed by S. Roycroft for R. Blome London 1679 Leather Bound Good Book Folio - over 12 - 15" tall Fifth edition. Contemporary calf boards, worn and chipped at the edges, rebacked spine and corners, with new cream coloured endpapers and pastedowns.. Not recently rebacked but I would estimate this was done c. 40 years ago. Rubs to the edges of the spine, spine ends, extremities. The binding is firm and sound. pp. frontis, [xii, including title page], 1-317, [ix]; Analogia Honorum (1677) [ii], 181, [ix]. All plates present as per Lowndes [73 plates], plus there are three additional portrait plates: 1. The Rt. Hon. Earl of Craven; 2. The Most Noble George Duke, Marquess and Earl of Buckingham, &c.; 3. Henry Somerset, Marques and Earl of Worcester, &c. 76 plates in total. 37.5cm. Portrait engravings are nice and clear and well-pressed. Guillim's Display of Heraldry contains hundreds of examples of arms throughout the text. One leaf is misbound - in the Honorum pp139-140 is bound in after pp. 140-141. One page in the Guillim is misnumbered; p. 204 is numbered p. 604. There is quite a lot of hand-colouring to the first section (Guillim) with a few touches of colour to the second part (not extensive). Most of the colouring is solely in yellow and quite neatly done. In the Guillim colouring is most significant on pages 18, 20, 24, 30-31, 35, 40-41, 43-44, 47-56, 58-70, 74, 77, 80, 85-94. Up to p. 175 colouring is solely in yellow; pages 176-77 have red and yellow colouring. After that, just yellow resumes (less frequently than in earlier pages). There is a little ink marginalia in the Honorum, p. 171. The Honorum has quite long tears to the bottom edge of p. 143-144, tear to bottom edge of one of the Achievements of Esqrs plates, and long tear to the top edge of another Achievements of Esqurs plates; also a long, partially repaired tear (old but neat repair) to the bottom edge of p. 79-80. In the Guillim, a tear to the bottom margin only of p. 123-124, some black smudge marks in the margins of p. 112, a few tiny burn holes or scorch marks to handful of pages; p. 57-58, 81-82, 109-110, 197-198; plus the same to just a couple of pages in the second half (Honorum). Overall a good, well-bound, solid and complete copy. Please contact us if you have enquiries or require further photographs. POSTAGE: A large and heavy volume. No additional postage charges to send within the UK mainland; UK islands and N. Ireland please ask for a postage quote - an additional fee will be necessary. Overseas postage will be much higher than our standard rate is likely to be expensive - please enquire if you would like a quote.
