The Ship's Bell [Signed Limited Edition] Black, Van-Lear Privately Printed at the Curwen Press, for Van-Lear Black 1927 Limited Edition Hardcover Very Good Slipcase Fair Book Folio - over 12 - 15" tall Anderson, Stanley (one autolithograph called The Pouring of The Bell) Signed by Author(s) Hardback in slipcase. Limited edition; this is hand-numbered, copy no. 93 or 100 copies privately printed for the author by Curwen Press in May 1927. Signed under the number and the signature looks like Van-Lear Black but is difficult to distinguish. This book is essentially a delightful dedication of friendship between Van-Lear Black, of Baltimore, Maryland, and Captain David W. Bone, celebrating the gift of a bell cast in the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, for Captain Bone's ship at that time the S.S. Transylvania (II). The beauty of the book lies in the passion and enthusiasm the author has for his subject and the generosity of spirit and mark of friendship which comes across in his prose. Unquestionably an extremely wealthy man (believed to be the wealthiest in Maryland at the time of his death in 1930) Black did not just seek to buy a friend a gift of monetary value, but rather to create a lasting item of beautiful craftsmanship which would hopefully bring joy to the recipient for many years to come and create an occasion of theatre which he would undoubtedly be remembered for. Black invited many of Captain Bone's family and a number of them were present at the casting of the bell, including Miss Alison Bone - Black's confidential secretary in London; he commissioned specially (presumably with Harold Curwen's assistance) Stanley Anderson to attend the foundry and produce a unique illustration to accompany the book, and the whole was beautifully printed by Curwen Press and bound in sailcloth, at Harold Curwen's suggestion. The book is bound in a cream sailcloth, which has some small, light marks and in the middle of the spine grey thumbing marks corresponding with a cut out shape in the slipcase for removing the book from the sleeve. The slipcase, as is common with Curwen at the time, is covered in a blue patterned paper, an Enid Marx design. The slipcase is marked and worn - rubbed, some splits and chips and very brown and marked at the edges in particular. There is a green woven page marker attached to the book at the head of the spine. Printed on excellent thick quality paper, untrimmed at the foredge and bottom edge; top edge gilt. Frontispiece plate, plus 15 pages of text. 36cm. A heavy book - overseas postage will be extra; no additional costs for sending within the UK. 308999
