First edition (this abridged version). Handsomely bound in a mid-brown calf. A school prize with gilt stamped crests on both front and rear boards for Magdalen College School in Brackley, Northants. Prize inscription written on the reverse of the front endpaper and dated 1872. Gilt tooled spine in six compartments. Red leather title label to the spine, with gilt titles. Edges and endpaper marbled; edges a little faded. There are light rubs to the edges of the binding and short nicks to the front joints at both spine ends. A small black mark on the rear board and a really small black ink mark to the edges of the preliminary pages and first two pages of text. Contents includes burrowing birds, spiders, insects, termites, swallows, squirrels, puffins, and much more. A full page frontis. illustration and numerous illustrations throughout the text. A little light scattered foxing. pp. xii, 411. 18.5cm. Like most of our stock, we have this book at a lower price in our N. Oxfordshire shop premises if you would like to call in.
