Complete 8 volume set but they lack their slipcases - when new they would have been presented in two slipcases, each holding 4 volumes. Three of the volumes have a name (Emma) written on the front endpaper in biro; no surname or other writing. No writing in any of the other volumes. The volumes are all otherwise clean and tight and appear barely read / some unread. A couple of very minor knocks to the bottom edge of the boards but most volumes are in near fine condition. Printed on Balmoral Wove paper and bound in Oxford library buckram with paper sides printed with designs by Richard Shirley Smith. The set uses the text of the Oxford Shakespeare edition edited by Stanley Wells and Gary Taylor. Volumes are 24cm tall. PLEASE NOTE this is an extremely HEAVY set. Both volumes are reprints and are uniformly bound in half red polished calf. Spines in six compartments, divided by raised bands. Gilt-stamped motif to five of the compartments and gilt stamped titles to the other. Colour has faded at the edges of the spines. Top edges gilt. Red marbled endpapers. No previous owner's names, inscriptions or other marks. The first few pages and front endpaper of Tragedies are crumpled / have multiple flattened creases. n.d. Not dated but c. 1843 - editor's acknowledgment in Vol. III, or Volume I of Histories (the first volume to be published I believe) is dated 1839. The postscript in Vol. II of Histories is dated 1841 and the advertisement in the biography volume is dated 1843. A handsome set in contemporary navy full polished calf. Spines gilt, in six compartments. Green morocco title panels and red number panels on the spines. Gilt-tooled edges; blind decoration to inside dentelles. All edges marbled. Endpapers marbled. Minor rubs. Joints are all very good. Bindings are all firm and sound. Some weakness to inner hinges - some volumes have light partial cracks at the endpapers; Vol. II, Vol. V and Vol. VII each have a full crack at the front endpaper hinge. All bindings are firm. Silk ribbon page markers, most attached at the headband. Excepting a small brown mark affecting c. 10 pages in Volume I, pages are beautifully crisp and clean. Volume III has a small dent in the bottom edge of the upper board. Each volume bears a contemporary small previous owner's bookpate on the front pastedown [bookplates are plain, not decorative and are for a William Payne]. Generously illustrated throughout. pp. [Comedies] viii, 456; viii, 453; [Histories] pp. [ix], 390; xcii, 398, xvii; [Tragedies + Poems] pp. viii, 471; viii, 360, 157; [Doubtful Plays &c.] pp. vii, 495; [Life, a Biography] pp. ix, 544. 24.5cm.
