Original Ladybird Artwork by Roger Hall
Henry Walter Hall, who was known by the name Roger Hall, was born on the 26th December 1914 and died on the 9th December 2006.
Roger Hall started his long creative career as soon as he left school when he took up a junior position at the London Art Service, a firm that specialised in creating cinema display and marketing pieces. By the age of 15 he was working on lettering huge 48-sheet posters, banners and other display and advertising signs.
Roger is well known for his career in book illustration, including the first Pan paperback cover for Casino Royal in 1955, internal illustrations for a number of titles in the Three Investigators series published by Collins in the 1960s and 70s, a number of UK editions of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys titles, again in the 1960s and 1970s. In the 1950s and 60s Hall produced cover illustrations for a number of publishers, including Hutchinson, Arrow, Corgi, Panther, Pan, Mills and Boon, Four Square and Mayflower. Now though, Roger Hall is particularly well remembered for his illustrations for Ladybird books.
