Part I: Libri Cancellarii et Procuratorum; Part II: Libri Cancellarii et Procuratorum, Accedunt Acta Curiae Cancellarii et Memoranda ex Registris Nonnulla. Quarter cloth - brown cloth spines with black paper sides. Boards are significantly rubbed at the edges and corners in particular, though surfaces also rubbed. Spine ends are bumped with some fraying to the cloth at the spine ends. Inscriptions on the front endpapers. Binding is sound and hinges are good. There are quite a lot of passages marked throughout the text with a green chalk pencil - this is three vertical lines of green pencil running through all the marked passages; there are a lot of them. Third edition, same year as the first edition (1872). First published anonymously, this third edition is also anonymous - no mention of the author, other than a handwritten 'by Samuel Butler' in ink on the title page. This binding needs repair / rebinding. Original dark green cloth. Rear joint split the full length. A previous owner has down the backstrip so it is holding together. Further rubs to the boards, spine, edges. Both inner hinges cracked and weakened. WHSmith & Son embossed oval stamp on the front endpaper. Previous owner's signature and date (1875) on the front endpaper. Some foxing to the first few and last few pages. Contents page is loose. Some pencil marks in the margins. pp. xii, 244. These separate volumes are uniformly bound in a handsome red morocco with red cloth boards, six gilt ruled spine compartments, five raised bands. Top edges are gilt. Minor rubs. An attractive and sturdy pair. The pair belonged to Hermione Lady Cobbold (nee Bulwer-Lytton) and were given to her by her mother on the occasion of her 15th birthday. The inscription inside each volume reads 'August 31st 1920, Hermione Lytton, from Mother'. Both volumes have some darkening to the edges of the endpapers. Both have a frontis. portrait with tissue guard. The Matthew Arnold volume has a very pale stain to the bottom edge of the front pastedown, endpaper and following free page. Title page continues: ' ... disegnati ed incisi dai quadri originali esistenti nelle varie citta della penisola pubblicata fer cura dell artistica Domenico Chiossone. Illustrata da brevi cenni storici e da biografie de'piu celebri pittori per David Chiossone, dedicata a Don Jose Guell y Rente'. Translated into English this reads: 'Artistic Italy - or Gallery of Italian Masterpieces drawn and etched from original paintings which can be found in various cities throughout Italy, published by Domenico Chiossone. Illustrated with brief historical notes and biographies of the more renowned artists, by David Chiossone. Dedicated to Don Jose Guell y Rente.' The book is bound in half-vellum (vellum spine and corners) with marbled boards. The binding is in reasonable condition only. The marbled boards are quite badly scuffed and the front board is curved / bowed in appearance. There is a small 1" split at the head of the spine hinge with the front board, and at the foot of the spine a 4" vertical and 2" horizontal tear in the velum binding has been professionally repaired. Internally there are pages of Italian text and fifty full-page black and white high quality etchings on thicker paper, each with a tissue-guard. There are a few fox marks (mainly to the tissue-guards) and small marks, but mainly the pages are crisp and clean. No writing. At the back of the book there appears to be a list of subscribers. The titles contained within the volume are: (i) 'An Ordinance Appointing Commissioners for Approbation of Publique Preachers' (1673). (ii) 'Twenty Lookes Over All the Round-Heads That Ever Lived in the World' (1643). (iii) 'Seditious Preachers, Ungodly Teachers' (1709). (iv) 'Memoirs of the Chevalier De St. George, with some Private Passages of the Life of the Late King James II' (1712). (v) 'The Several Declarations Made In Council Concerning the Birth of the Prince of Wales' (1688). (vi) 'A Faithful Memorial of that Remarkable Meeting of Many Officers of the Army in England, at Windsor Castle, in the Year 1648' (1659). (vii) 'A Miraculous Victory Obtained by the Right Honorable Ferdinando Lord Fairfax, Against the Army Under the Command of the Earl of Newcastle at Wakefield in Yorkshire' (1643). All the pamphlets were limited to 120 large paper and 400 small paper copies. They seem to have been bound together in no real order - the pamphlets are separately paginated at the head of the page, and the numbering at the foot of the pages is not consecutive. The binding is pink cloth that is a little faded to the spine and the edges of the boards. There is a previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown. The pages are age-tanned and there is some scattered foxing. The last page has a heavy diagonal crease and has a piece missing from the bottom corner (not affecting the text). 1890. 038727
