Title page continues: ' ... disegnati ed incisi dai quadri originali esistenti nelle varie citta della penisola pubblicata fer cura dell artistica Domenico Chiossone. Illustrata da brevi cenni storici e da biografie de'piu celebri pittori per David Chiossone, dedicata a Don Jose Guell y Rente'. Translated into English this reads: 'Artistic Italy - or Gallery of Italian Masterpieces drawn and etched from original paintings which can be found in various cities throughout Italy, published by Domenico Chiossone. Illustrated with brief historical notes and biographies of the more renowned artists, by David Chiossone. Dedicated to Don Jose Guell y Rente.' The book is bound in half-vellum (vellum spine and corners) with marbled boards. The binding is in reasonable condition only. The marbled boards are quite badly scuffed and the front board is curved / bowed in appearance. There is a small 1" split at the head of the spine hinge with the front board, and at the foot of the spine a 4" vertical and 2" horizontal tear in the velum binding has been professionally repaired. Internally there are pages of Italian text and fifty full-page black and white high quality etchings on thicker paper, each with a tissue-guard. There are a few fox marks (mainly to the tissue-guards) and small marks, but mainly the pages are crisp and clean. No writing. At the back of the book there appears to be a list of subscribers. Brown endpapers. All page edges gilt. A handsome edition. This copy is in reasonable condition only. The boards are bumped with some grubby marks. Spine leans. Cloth slightly wrinkled in places. Internally there is some foxing and some evidence of water damage to the top edges of the first c.30 pages and a few other pages throughout. The half-title page is missing - torn out. The hinges are cracked between the front and rear between pastedowns and endpapers, scuffing the endpapers. Binding weak. No inscriptions. 350pp + 2pp of adverts. The titles contained within the volume are: (i) 'An Ordinance Appointing Commissioners for Approbation of Publique Preachers' (1673). (ii) 'Twenty Lookes Over All the Round-Heads That Ever Lived in the World' (1643). (iii) 'Seditious Preachers, Ungodly Teachers' (1709). (iv) 'Memoirs of the Chevalier De St. George, with some Private Passages of the Life of the Late King James II' (1712). (v) 'The Several Declarations Made In Council Concerning the Birth of the Prince of Wales' (1688). (vi) 'A Faithful Memorial of that Remarkable Meeting of Many Officers of the Army in England, at Windsor Castle, in the Year 1648' (1659). (vii) 'A Miraculous Victory Obtained by the Right Honorable Ferdinando Lord Fairfax, Against the Army Under the Command of the Earl of Newcastle at Wakefield in Yorkshire' (1643). (viii) 'Colchester Teares: Affecting & Afflicting City & Country' (1648). (ix) 'A Letter from an English Traveller at Rome to His Father' (1721). (x) 'A King and No King: Or, the Best Argument for a Just Title. Being the Present Case of Great Britain, Briefly Consider'd in a Seasonable Address to the People' (1716). All the pamphlets were limited to 120 large paper and 400 small paper copies. They seem to have been bound together in no real order - the pamphlets are separately paginated at the head of the page, and the numbering at the foot of the pages is not consecutive. The binding is pink cloth that is a little faded to the spine and the edges of the boards. There is a previous owner's bookplate on the front pastedown. The pages are age-tanned and there is some scattered foxing. The last page has a heavy diagonal crease and has a piece missing from the bottom corner (not affecting the text). 038727

Endpapers and outer edges marbled. The 'Nouveau Testament' volume has a one inch crack / repaired split in the binding at the head of the spine at the back board outer hinge. The corners of both volumes are rubbed, exposing the boards. Significant foxing to end pages; text pages are predominantly clean with occasional foxing. Previous owner's name and date [1865] written in ink on the title page of 'Nouveau Testament''. Both volumes have contemporary bookplates for the same previous owner on their pastedowns. Leather bindings with raised bands and gilt tooling to the spine. The pages are gilt-edged. Marbled endpapers. Interesting gilt embossed presentation inscription on the front board of each volume which reads: 'Royal Academy of Arts 1863. To Mr Richard Phene Spiers for the Best Architectural Design.' Richard Phene Spiers (1838-1916) was successful and renowned architect of the nineteenth century, who won the gold medal and travelling scholarship of the Royal Academy. The leather boards have a few marks and are quite scuffed around the edges. The spine and boards are beginning to split quite significantly around the hinges of both volumes, and there are some small chips in the leather at the head of both spines.
