19 The Hosanna Man
Callow, Philip Jonathan Cape 1956 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall
The author's first novel, and now extremely hard to find in such nice condition. The Hosanna Man was published in 1956 and was initially very well received. In the novel the author portrays working-class bohemians in a Midlands city, in a fictionalised, yet partly autobiographical way. However, a Nottinghamshire bookseller brought a libel case against Callow, claiming that he was characterised in the novel, and the publishers withdrew the book from sale and pulped the remainder of their unsold stock. This is a lovely copy. The pages are very clean. No names, inscriptions or other marks at all. The green cloth boards have some very slight bumps at the spine ends. 222pp. The dust jacket is VG, with some small chips at the head of the spine and the top corners. The back cover of the dust jacket is generally 'greyed' and the edges of the flyleaves just darkened. The DJ is supplied by us in a loose protective archival film sleeve to prolong the life of the jacket. (This does not adhere to the book or jacket in any way and is fully removable if preferred). 044139

Second Impression. 'This is the story of two men of vastly different character, and of the woman who linked their lives. John Duckworth is an idealist whose gently nature and love of beauty would seem to make him a poor match for the dominating personality and arrogant exhibitionism of Mortimer Piggott... Set against the background of a newspaper office - a setting the author knows intimately - and against the broader background of the rolling uplands of Northumberland and the smoky basin of a Yorkshire mill-town, "Virtue Has No Talons" is the study of two irreconcilable personalities.'
