Old (undated) children's board book containing 14 full page colour illustrations with short inscriptions underneath. Pictorial front cover, blue cloth spine. The boards and spine are very worn, front board has several significant chips and rubs. Both boards are rather grubby. Internally there is a small bookseller sticker to the first page (front pastedown) and the first page has a tear in the illustration which has been repaired although there is still a piece missing from it. 3" tear to the hinge (from the foot) to pp3-4, and p4 also has a repaired tear to the illustration. The first four pages are rather grubby, but the other pages are bright and clean, althought most have scuffs to the corners. Image available on request. A number of notable authors published their novels and other writings in Blackwood's; for example, George Eliot, Anthony Trollope, Margaret Oliphant, Thomas Hardy, Joseph Conrad, and many others. It ceased publication in 1980. This volume contains the first printing of part of the novel, Sarracinesa, by Francis Marion Crawford, probably the best known work of this prolific nineteenth-century author. pp. 1-876. Spines gilt in six compartments, with bands. Marbled boards. Leather good, light rubs but a short crack to the front joint, c. one inch at the top. Some surface rubs to the boards. Inside, front inner hinge is very good; rear inner hinge full-length crack, exposing the cords. Binding holds fairly firm on the cords. The rest of the binding is strong. Previous owner's signature on the second f.f.e.p.. Foxing to prelims. Some light foxing to pages (nothing heavy). A good copy in handsome binding.
